HP OfficeJet 8600 no longer prints. Worked before the latest OS update and I have since updated the Drivers (2.10.0.201112) and Firmware (2011A). I get the "Printing - Waiting for printer to become available." and nothing happens.

OK, got it and quadruple checked it turned everything off and on again and it still works.

ON MAC: Delete current printer:  System Preferences, Printers and Scanners and select any Printers on left side of window then press the “-“ sign below that window to remove it.

ON PRINTER: Make sure printer is set to “WIRELESS DIRECT” - On printer select SETUP, NETWORK and turn WIRELESS DIRECT ON.  I have Security turned on and noted the 8 digit passcode.  You can leave the Security OFF. I have WIRELESS turned OFF.

When You are ready to print something:

  1. Go to “SYSTEM PREFERENCES”
  2. Go to “NETWORK”
  3. Go to “NETWORK NAME:”  Select “HP-Print-53-OfficeJet Pro 8600” - YOU NOW LOST INTERNET because you are only connected to your printer
  4. Go back to whatever you wanted to print and print as you normally would - Enter 8 digit passcode enabled.
    1. You might need to select the printer in the Applications print window if it isn't defaulted.
  5. UNDO Step 4 by reselecting your previous "NETWORK NAME" to get back on the internet

I noticed that the HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 is supported by Apple's AirPrint, and am wondering out loud if this would work with the 8600 model. You can try with your 8600 powered, and networked, then visiting System Preferences : Printers & Scanners panel. Right-click on the printer icon and select Reset printing system… . This will initiate a removal and re-add sequence, where ordinarily you would choose compatible HP 8600 drivers, but instead, see if it will allow you to select AirPrint, and then re-add the printer. Right-click again, and choose Set default printer. Print something.

If Mac updates their operating system should't they also take care of the relationship with the printers??? Yes, I understand that we are dealing with HP but I find Apple's lack of concern disturbing to say the least.

I'm surprised that they don't make printers so that they can update all products at once and make even more money then what they are making now.

Apple should be ashamed!

By the way I am having the same problem - can't print using the hp 8600 with this new operating system.

This fixed the problem for me. Turn off the printer and unplug it for ~5 minutes. Uninstall the Printer using the HP Uninstall, go into Finder and search for anything/everything HP and delete those files - everything HP related. Empty the Trash. Restart the computer. Again go into Finder and search for anything/everything HP and delete those files - everything HP related. Empty the Trash. Again restart the computer.  (I was unable to delete 2 HP kernel files and they remained). Plug the printer back in and turn it on.  Open System Preferences, Printers & Scanners, add a printer using the Generic PCL Laser Printer and it worked for my OfficeJet 8600 Pro.  Then go to https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/closure/hp-officejet-pro-8600-e-all-in-one-printer-series-n911/4322914/model/4323658?ssfFlag=true&sku= to get the latest drivers.  On the HP site make sure you select the proper iOS - the site defaults to OS 10.15.  Download and install the new drivers and follow the prompts.  When asked if you want to use the Generic or HP drivers select HP.  To scan now I use the Image Capture application.

Yep - running Big Sur 11.1 Beta (20C5061b). Same problem. I tried everything - resetting the printer to factory defaults, changing the USB connection to different hubs (this is for a USB-connected version), uninstalling and reinstalling the HP Drivers.

On a lark I booted Windows 7 under Mac OS using VMware Fusion - and I'm able to print from Windows (with the same physical USB connection). It's got to be the HP driver on Big Sur. I'm going to submit a bug report but don't hold your breath.

Right now it is working but I haven’t turned off the computer or printer since I got it working again. Last two times they were turned off the problem occurred again. Next power outage or computer reboot I am sure I will have the problem again and will try your suggestion. Maybe the next patch to Big Sur will fix this problem - I hope. Thank you.

My computer locked up hard so I had to restart it and when it finally rebooted the lack of printing problem is back. I was unable to select the "Reset Printing System" because it is grayed out. I did go through the deleting everything/anything HP, restarted the computer and then added the printer back. Still do not have the option to "Reset Printing System" because it is grayed out. Thank you anyway. Still fighting this problem.

Checked for new drivers on Dec 21:

Type:DriverVersion: 2.10.0.201112

Operating systems:macOS 10.15

Release date:Nov 12, 2020

File name: HP_Easy_Start.app.zip (9.1 MB)

HP defaults for 10.15 and gives an option to change the OS to 11.0. But after changing the OS it still shows ver 2.10.0.201112 for 10.15. So no driver update for 11+.

It doesn't work with USB cable connections for me, but does work over AirPrint. :/ I noticed macOS' dmesg showed a lot of "HP Device Monito@: AppleUSBHostUserClient::openGated: could not open provider IOUSBHostInterface. provider already opened for exclusive access by HP Device Monito". Without HP's softwares and drivers installed, I don't see these lines.

HP OfficeJet 8600 no longer prints. Worked before the latest OS update and I have since updated the Drivers (2.10.0.201112) and Firmware (2011A). I get the "Printing - Waiting for printer to become available." and nothing happens.
