Changing secondary desktop picture on Big Sur

I have an external display on my macbook pro, configured as an extension to the internal screen (not mirrored).

I can set a changing background picture for the macbook display, but on the external display the option is ghosted out. Confused.

Running Big Sur.... any thoughts from anyone?

can't find arrange for extended desktop i am trying to connect an external monitor for extending my desktop on a MacBook and I looked it up on the apple site, however the "arrange" option doesn't appear when I go into displays in system preferences. When I plug in the monitor via hdmi, it causes mine to flicker and then go dark.

Connecting extra display to my imac 24 Hi, may i know where to find the “arrangement” button on “display” on imac 24? Usually there is the “arrangement” button when using other macs, but on imac 24, there is not this button. Thank you!

Never mind... the answer is to select the folder with the pictures, THEN select A picture in the folder, which unghosts the options...
