HDMI port causes kernel panic on new M1 Mac mini

Hello all,

I have a problem. I hooked a second monitor up to the new Mini. One was connected to the HDMI port, and one was connected to the thunderbolt port with a HDMI->Thunderbolt connector. All was going well.

Then suddenly, everything went fuxored. It wouldn't boot, etc. I was able to trace the problem to the HDMI port on the Mini causing a kernel panic. 100% of the time if there is a monitor plugged into the Mini's HDMI port, it won't boot. It boots halfway and then reboots. If I hot plug it when it's on, the Mac turns off and goes into the boot loop.

I tried all permutations of monitors and cables switching back and forth and even different cables and adapters. Either monitor works in the thunderbolt port. Both crash in the HDMI port (and I tried different HDMI cables too).

Here is the panic log

It took me about 2 weeks to get a replacement. The initial target date was a month out. I would suggest you call them to ensure you are getting expedited shipping which you are entitled to. Mine was set at standard shipping until I had them change it. Also the information they give on the online “orders” area is often just plain wrong. For example, they stated that I had received my replacement when I had not. My shipping status was also incorrect. They stated my unit was on the way back after I had FedEx pick it up but when FedEx delivered it to them they changed the message to one that said I had to send the unit back.

Apple knows it has an HDMI problem on its new M1 Mac minis. I received one yesterday and I have tried to install 2 monitors. The mini requires the use of the HDMI port to connect to 2 monitors. I have found the HDMI port will recognize the monitor but not provide a signal to the display. Connecting another monitor via a USB4 port is doable. If the HDMI and a USB4 port is used for monitors, the display option in settings will allow the display “arrangement” even though the HDMI display is blank. Apple suggests I send the unit back and wait a month for a replacement. Apple should have a better response for customers that have to wait weeks only to receive defective product.

M1 Macs are having massive problems with kernel panics while attempting to put thunderbolt devices to sleep via power management. Apple is receiving TONS of kernel panic logs but pretends they've never heard of the issue when called via tech support. It appears Apple is pretending the issue isn't real.

You can find instances all over the internet with people complaining about kernel panics and many thunderbolt devices (monitors, raid arrays, TB hard drives, thunderbolt docks, soft raid programs loaded onto external raid arrays, etc). People are also complaining about monitors connected via HDMI. Apple has a massive M1 problem on its hands and so far is pretending it doesn't exist.

Lots of people are returning their M1 Macs before the return window closes because they're not getting any sense that Apple is even acknowledging the problem.

So I received my M1 Mac mini replacement today. At first I thought I still had a video problem. I had to switch the cables around a couple of times but both monitors came up solid. No noise - rock solid video. I restored from my 2016 MBP backup drive. It took about 45 minutes. I rebooted a number of times and both monitors came up within a few moments.

I restored from 11.1 with no problems. I did this with a lot of stuff hanging off the mini. I have 2 TB3 docks, 3 external drives, and a BOSE sound system. I have one monitor directly connected to the mini HDMI port and one via a dock using a USB-3/DisplayPort cable. The mini took all this stuff without a hick-up during the initial install. Pretty impressive.

Some folks are saying, return the mini and demand your money back. I’m glad I didn’t do that. So far this is all working out ,,, and the performance is great!

Update: my late 2018 MacBook Pro (intel chipset) had a sleep related kernel panic last night (with the same setup as I was using for my Mac Mini), which tells me the sleep-related kernel panics are probably at least in part due to OS X Mojave 10.14 ... I’ve never had a kernel panic with that MacBook until now, but I had not connected it overnight to my thunderbolt hub or thunderbolt-display port connected 4k monitor.

I have a new M1 Mini and had trouble with the monitor connected to the HDMI connector. I can get it to boot ok but then if it goes to sleep, the monitor wakes to 'snow'. If I power off and on the monitor, the issue goes away instantly. The same thing happens if you unplug and plug the HDMI cable. I have replaced the cable without help.

If I use a USB c to DP cable, I can get resolution of the monitor wake up issue but then there is no audio on the monitor.

In the analytics log I find a powerd error
