duplicated folders
I think I have inadvertently duplicated my photos. Can anyone tell me what these folders are? The all seem to contain hundreds of photos - all of which I have in my photos folder. Can I delete them?

NO NO NO. (sorry for shouting)
These are the folders INSIDE your photos library, where photos stores the images. Do not change ANYTHING inside the photo library if you don't want to lose access to all your photos.
(your library is : /Users/barryhodges/Pictures/Photos Library copy.photoslibrary)
If this is a COPY of your actual library - then you can delete the whole library - but before you try this be VERY sure that it is a copy, and not the one being used by photos.
To be honest, I'm surprised spotlight is even showing these to you.

Yes, try a new unused library - no icloud - import some photos. See if that works.
If it works with imported photos, but an iCloud sync stops it working then I don't know (unless the iCloud sync is not fully complete which if your library is large can take some days).
The Photos Library has no user-serviceable parts. Removing or changing anything inside it runs a strong risk of damaging the library beyond repair.
When you click in facebook to add a photo, don't use those folders.
Instead - scroll down in the left hand side bar to the media section, and click on photos there:
Then you will be offered photos that are stored in your library.
If your backup is time machine, you should be able to restore from a date before you made any changes.
If you have manually backed up by copying the library package to an external drive, then whether you have backed up the mistakes or not will depend on when you last copied the backup, and if you kept any earlier versions. In either case, you don't NEED to buy a new mac here, whatever you can restore from backup can also be fixed in your current machine.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't use this event as a perfect excuse for some shiny new hardware (with more storage) though :-)
PS - is your professional familiar not only with Macs, but how macs manage their photo libraries? He needs to be if he is going to give you good information.
What is the file format of the photos?
Are you taking the photos with an iPhone or iPad in the space saving High Efficiency format? You can see this in the Settings > Camera on the iPhone.
Most of the photos in the HEIC format cannot be uploaded using the Media Browser. Only , when I edit them and add some adjustments and Photos has created a preview, will they be visible in the Media Browser for upload.
When I look at my Photos Library using the Media Browser, most of the images are greyed out - all photos in the HEIC format, that do not have adjustments applied. This started with with the most recent version of macOS 10.15 and persists in macOS 11 Big Sur.
So, please check the image format of the files in your library. Are they JPEGs or HEIC, or another format?
In my Library I emceeing this in the Media Browser: The images with white filenames have been edited and have a JPEG preview, the other images with grey filenames do not have adjustments applied and do not have a JPEG preview and cannot be selected when uploading.
Assuming it is a problem with your account. Your simplest solution may just to be to set up a different user account for you, and copy stuff from old to new account as you need to.
Trying to diagnose the actual problem will probably take more effort.
Thank you Tony. I did delete these, but the Mac put them back on it’s own. I can now access all my photos through the “photos” folder, but my issue is this - when I want add a photo to a Facebook post, and click the “add photo” symbol, I am directed to these folders. I then have to open the “photos” folder which is just below “locations” on the sidebar. I can then access my photos although a large number are greyed out.
Despite being greyed out, if I do click on them to load into Facebook, they do open in the post.
As I have backed up my Mac on external hard drive, can any damage I have done be repaired by Apple? 🙁
That’s what I have been doing, Tony, but I don’t seem to remember have to do that before. This is started because my storage was running low and I tried to free up space
Thanks for the advice - I have given the machine to a professional to check what damage I have done - all self inflicted.
If he can’t sort it out I feel a trade in with Apple coming on, so my next question is, if I buy a new Mac and reload from my back up disk, will I transfer any of the stupid mistakes I have made on to the new machine? 😳
Again, thanks for the help. This is a great place to get advice
Thanks Tony
He certainly seemed confident enough and he has done work for me before on laptops and tablets.
However, if he doesn’t fix it then we do have an authorised Apple repair centre in the town, obviously a lot more expensive!
Thanks again
Hi Tony, machine is back but still not right.
Pictures folder if opened in finder
If pictures folder clicked when looking for pics in FB - photos is greyer out
When i go to benjy's 4th birthday from FB, no pictures available
But here they are if i go straight to photos
Other folders work fine whichever way they are opened.
However, on my ipad and iphone several albums do not come up when accessed via FB -
Ok - so this is where we are.
Had an hour on the phone yesterday with the apple tech guy, Chris. Obviously knew what he was doing, accessed my screen and we went through various procedures. Ended up deleting the Photos album, opening a new one and it seemed to be working. As I have 40,000 photos, and videos it was obviously going to take some time to reload from the cloud, so I went off to wait for the upload.
The upshot is that it hasn't sorted the problem, so will try and get back to them today.
Tried the"safe mode", Tony - if anything it was worse, but worth a shot.
The situation is now as below.
I can access all my photos, folders and albums - all the photos are there and not greyed out.
When I try to load a photo onto facebook or onto here - I get this.
It shows the album, but no pictures.
The other strange thing is that if I open finder and click "pictures", as below I can see the "photos library" click on it and open.
When I try to insert a picture as below, if i click the "pictures" in the dialogue box, the "photos" library is greyed out.
That tells me i have a path issue?
To complicate matters - possibly related, two other issues.
On my ipad and iphone - if i access my photos to add to FB, I can only see a few albums, exactly the same on both , although all the albums are on there.
When I connect my Ipad via USB, my Mac immediately tries to reload all my photos again and i have to disconnect the cable to stop it!
Thanks again for all the help and advice - this is totally self inflicted, nothing to do with Apple products / systems.
Sad to say, i set up me new account and the problem persists. So, I have obviously damaged the photos app and repair doesn't fix it.
Do i need an apple tech to remove and re-install the application or is it worse than that?
It is not possible to uninstall Photos separately. Photos is a part of the system, just like Mail and Contacts. To reinstall Photos you reinstall the system, but only, if you are sure that the problem is system wide and not caused by a damaged Photos Library.
How have you tested in the new user account? Did you test with a new Photos Library in your new Home folder, or did you try to open your old photos Library? Testing in a new user account will only tell you if the system is damaged, if everything is new - a new account, all the basic system preferences, and a new, empty photos library, with new test images imported to the library, and no third party start-up item active.
I used iCloud to re-populate the photos, but from what Leonie says, perhaps i should set up some new folders and try that first?
The tech guy at Apple seemed to think it was an optimisation issue, but we ran out of time yesterday.
