I just purchased the baseline M1 MacBook Air and I’m having trouble with the screensaver taking over the computer. It will come on even while using the device and then there’s no way to dismiss the screensaver. I have to switch users, log out, and/or restart the machine to get the screensaver to go away. At this point I’ve disabled the screensaver (which for me is fine) but I’m hoping there’s a fix out there somewhere.

"Configure the screen saver to not be displayed on the login window, which will also prevent the screen saver from starting 20 minutes after clicking on Login Window… or Switch User. This can be done by logging in as an admin user and entering the following command into Terminal: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver loginWindowIdleTime 0 When the Password: prompt appears, type the password of the user that is currently logged in and press Return (the password being typed at this prompt will not be displayed)."
I’m afraid that the multi user theory can’t be true because I’m the sole user of my Mac mini.

I am still experiencing the issue on my M1 MBP, even AFTER the 11.2.2 update.
M1 MacBook Air user here, I can confirm this bug is still not fixed. Apple please investigate further and resolve
I have no clue what's the firmware reinstall since the OS version will be latest (11.0.1) after reinstalled.
Reinstall OS is not fun since it will brick the Mac unless recovery by Apple Configurator 2 under DFU.
I think I spot a definite pattern: When only me (single user) is logged in, I do not see this happen. When my wife is logged in with here profile in the background via switch user, this happens all the time. If I logout all users and restart and only log in as me, it goes all day with no problems.

No solution. I have to force power off.
How long it will take to Apple to accept there is an issue and to correct it ? I am afraid it will take a looooooong time

Lame. Apple has offered a replacement MacBook Air, but due to my custom configuration, it won't arrive until late January. Silly. Who's to guaranty a replacement would remedy the issue considering everyone here is experiencing the same thing. Let's all lean towards a software remedy ASAP!
Macbook air M1. Big Sur v.11.1 Same issue. I do have multiple accounts on the machine, but the screensaver error occurs even if the other user hasn't logged in. Closing and opening the lid does fix untill the next occurrence

One week old Mac Mini M1,
Big Sur 11.3 (the update arrived today!)
Single user, no fast switching, no screensaver allowed - same issue: unkillable and not bypassable screensaver (and its ugly!), need to reboot every 20 mins :( And I was hoping to replace my 2009 Mac Pro cause that one reboots once per day, lol. Probably I'll return it, still have 3 days left to return.
I run Mac Mini headless, through Apple's Screen Sharing app - that may be the trigger.
I have the same issue. AppleCare is ‘unaware’ of the issue. I suspect this means they don’t have a fix planned in the next update.
Apple recommends I reinstall the MacOS!
I have this too on new M1 MacBook Pro. Issues are twofold
1) Password box disappears when switching user.
2) Reverts to screensaver when change user. Only fix i worked out is to close/open lid.
