Do maps of runs get filled in with WiFi-only Apple Watch?

I don't want to carry an iPhone while running, but would like to see maps of my runs. I understand that the apps might not be available during the run if one cannot cache local maps. Can map caching be done?

The second question is whether once I get back to a place with WiFi coverage, so that the Apple Watch can access map information, will the run's history show the map?

Or does one simply need an Apple Watch with cellular to have maps of runs?

I leave the phone at home then go out for a workout, when I come home the watch uploads the data to the phone then I can look at the map of where I have been.

My watch is GPS only.
