Help. I think the Big Sur update might have killed my mac

Hi,

I downloaded the Big Sur-version this morning. Everything was fine, until the “less than one minute remaining” (which took way longer than less than one minute, btw) jumped into “There was a problem installing” and a black screen that only gives me the option to re-start my computer as a hard disk for another computer. I tried re-starting my mac from the apple-icon in the top left corner. I entered my password. Then it re-launched into half an hour of waiting time and the whole spiel started again. And once more when I tried it again after another black screen.

I’m not the most knowledgeable on computers so I’m a little clueless what to do now.

ps: while I’ve been writing, it’s been stuck on “less than one minute remaining” for half an hour

Shutdown the computer completely. Plugin to charger. Start-up and right away hold the Shift key ( Safe Mode). This will attempt to repair the disk and clear out cache files. It will also boot very slowly so be patient. If all goes well, the upgrade will complete but again give it time to process all the changes.

One option is to restart in Internet Recovery. There are options in Disk Utilities to Repair the Disk, also in DU to look at the Empty Space or the option to Reinstall Big Sur over the existing installation and Last / most radical option to Erase the Disk completely and install a Clean Big Sur. Understand, this last option will remove Everything. It would require starting like a new computer and have to install all Apps and personal files

Sorry, but I fear that Apple and their Big Sur software has broken your Macbook. £/€500 to repair if you can find an open Genius Bar.

Totally agree with BobThe Fisherman + 1.

If one does the necessary research Before attempting the Upgrade to Big Sur, it can go with the minimal problems. Using 32 bit apps, antivirus, optimizers, cleaner apps or any type of app that modifies the macOS is going to ruin the upgrade.

The option BobThe Fisherman suggest - start over with an Erase and Install Big Sur if you know the computer is compatible. Make a Bootable Installer

That is fine. English is not my mother tongue either.

The Kaspersky is an issue that needs to be removed. Suggest you Restore from the Last Time Machine Back BEFORE trying to install Big Sur. Once restored to the last working Mojave via Time Machine - remove the Kaspersky software via the instruction from them. Do another Time Machine after removed and attempt and upgrade to Big Sur again.

Hi,

You and Bob don't have a clue about what you are talking about. My machine is dead - I cannot erase the disk or do any other form of restore or recovery.

Apple has now removed my computer and other from the list of machines suitable for upgrade. Why have they done this if there is no issue.

If it is as simple as you suggest, why was there no warning. I responded to a prompt to Upgrade generated by Apple and have ended up with a broken Macbook Pro.

As stated, when taken to a Genius Bar, quoted £500 to repair.

And do a bit of research before responding. I suggest Google, which will reveal significant numbers with this specific issue.

I am sick of hearing from the fanbois that my machine is not broken!

No one said your computer is not broken. I said that installing Big Sur did not break it. Installing Big Sur on incompatible hardware or on a computer with incompatible software may result in a non working computer but Big Sur did not cause the issue. Your decision to install Big Sur on an incompatible machine caused the issue.
