iCloud power to delete my documents

If I create a document on my mac lap top and I want to keep it on my lap top but it goes to iCloud and then I delete it from iCloud then why is it deleted from my lap top where it was created? I want to keep what I create on the device I created it. I don't want interference from iCloud.

When Mac is signed in with Apple ID and password in system preferences , if iCloud Drive and desktops and documents box are checked https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mchle5a61431/10.14/mac/10.14

These personal documents will be visible in finder > under iCloud section > iCloud Drive > Documents , they will mirror in iCloud.com also , once you delete these personal documents from Mac if other devices like iPhone are also synced in which the same Apple ID and password of Mac is signed on the same network , where iCloud Drive is turned on , they will also be deleted from iPhone and from where it was created that is your Mac laptop as well from iCloud.com

See the article https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204025

You wrote - I want to keep what I create on the device I created it.

You can disconnect Mac from iPhone , just sign out the Apple ID from Mac https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT208242

And sign in with new Apple ID and password in Mac https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204053 , the iPhone will not have any impact , those documents that used to sync from the primary iCloud will stay on the iPhone .

The other way is you can move documents from Mac to other location see the last para of the article https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mchl1a02d711/10.14/mac/10.14

Hey carolfromefland,

We see that you want to be able to keep your deleted iCloud data on your device, and we'd like to help!

The purpose of iCloud is to safely store your data on your account to access it on multiple Apple devices. Therefore, if you delete the data on your iCloud account, then it'll also be removed on the devices that uses the same iCloud account.

If you don't sign in to your iCloud account and save the data, then it won't be saved under your iCloud account. For more info about iCloud, check out this link here: iCloud

We hope this helps!

Best regards.

What if I want to keep documents on my original device and not have them go to other devices? I somehow accidentally checked that i wanted docs from my Mac in iCloud (or an update checked that by default) and now it says that if I uncheck the box, the docs will be deleted from my hard drive- but will still be in iCloud (where I don't want them). Is there any way to just reverse this? I never had this problem before, and I don't really want to have to create multiple apple id's.

Once iPhone / Mac are signed in with same Apple ID and password on the same network the documents sync , if you don't want those documents to sync in other device say iPhone , sign out the Apple ID from Iphone and disconnect it from Mac .

Then keep the box of iCloud Drive and desktops and documents always checked in Mac , they will be saved in iCloud.com as well in iCloud Drive ( finder locations ) , also set up time machine to back up the data .
