I’m trying to add my phone number to iMessage so that I can receive and also send messages from my phone number but I’m getting “error occurred “ how do I fix this?

some mobile providers and/or connection plans do not allow international sms, they are needed to activate iMessage.
check this, and if it's your case, ask provider to activate them for short period while you activate imessage
I followed all the guidelines but I’m still getting a message that error occurred in adding my phone number to my iMessage
