Which Office version is required for my MacBook Pro 5.5?

Microsoft only supports Office 2019 and Office 365. Older versions are no longer supported and do not receive security updates.

Appears your Mac is from 2009. Likely Office 2011 would run on it.

what MacOS are you running?

There may be a few "work-alike" suites available for free that will read and write Office files.
