iPad plugged into mac "A software update is required to connect to iPad" update on computer? is this ok?

I had my iPad plugged into my Mac - was doing an update on iPad and a message popped up "A software update is require to connect to iPad" on my Mac. Is this normal? I didn't do the update because WHAT is it updating? My MAC is up to date...? When I go to the Finder and click on my iPad it shows it updated to 14.2 and it looks fine?
