On the thunderbolt cable from the back of the monitor goes directly into the https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter adapter
Be careful. The thunderbolt-3 to Thunderbolt-2 Adapter has this warning:
"Note: This adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays. "
The 3-to-2 adapter is physically compatible. But this says it is not functionally compatible.
thanks for your quick responds. I have read the specs. In my current setup MBP 2012, I have dual thunderbolt displays 27" daisy chained. Now the M1 uses 1 thunderbolt bus on two ports. can my current setup work with M1 MBP 16gb? or any variation?
Unlike newer Thunderbolt 3 displays, the Apple Thunderbolt display cannot provide computer power via Thunderbolt, so has a separate MagSafe connector for power. You can connect that to the laptop's second USB=C/Thunderbolt 3 port with a MagSafe adapter.
Malcolm and akbarali,
I finally figured out why my MBP-15 got powered just now. It's not from my Apple Thunderbolt display. I have dual monitors and the other monitor does it. I've never expected an Lenovo monitor could do that, so I didn't think about that case. Now I think the Magsafe1 Cable adapter should be the way for sure.
Thanks.
Aaah! Thats how it was working. Your comment came in as a glummer of hope, that too gone now :( . Thanks for replying so quick KyleJao. I have one thunderbolt display just had a thought few days back to add one more so was wondering whats the situation with M1. The only pathetic thing about the M1 is that it has 2 ports.
How can you tell if your Thunderbolt monitor (purchased in January 2013) is Thunderbolt 1 or 2? Is there such a thing as Thunderbolt 1? I'm hoping to hook it up to an M1 MacBookAir and figure I'll need the adapter from Thunderbolt 2 to 3, but will that work with my monitor? I asked Apple in a chat, but even she wasn't sure.
Thanks!
Ruth
Easy to say, but who has actually tried it? I have tried with a Thunderbolt 3 cable and it didn't work!
I would like to hear from people who have actually succeeded doing this and how exactly. In my System Preferences - Network, the Thunderbolt just says "Inactive".
Have you tried Apple Support Chat? That's where I was getting some help on this issue until I realized I needed to only use one adapter. Your MacBook Air is likely still within the first 30-60 days....if you didn't purchase AppleCare.
Good luck!
Ruth
The Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter - Apple packaging specifically delineates that this product does not work with the Apple Cinema Display. Can you advise which product is for the Apple Cinema Display?
Yes, you need a Thunderbolt 3 adapter.
Thank your for your answer 🙏
Can the MacBook Pro M1, daisy chain two thunderbolt displays 27"?
anyone try this?
No. The M1 chip supports only two displays. The laptop's display is one, so only one external display.
have you tried this?
The second display must use the HDMI port, and there is no way to do that with a Thunderbolt Display.
