On the thunderbolt cable from the back of the monitor goes directly into the https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter adapter

The M1 Macs are the first ARM Macs and do not have as many ports, and. can't run as many displays as some of the Intel equivalents. That's why they still sell Intel Mac minis and MacBook Pros. The next generation will probaly see the end of the Intel Macs.
