iPhone 12 Pro Max Touch Issues

ive had my phone a little over a week now and am getting a little frustrated with a few things.

Firstly, when navigating within an app and trying to go back to the previous screen using, I find I’m having to tap the link a number of times for it to work. E.g. in the image below, the back arrow top right beneath the time with the 3 - attempt to go back to main screen to access the 3 messages is near impossible.

Secondly, touch accuracy seems to be out. Key pad and most apps are fine. But if I’d like to go back to correct a typo or insert a word in the middle of text, it’s near impossible to get the cursor to the correct location by tapping (need to tap and hold space to move the cursor).

Third, even though True Tone is deactivated, the screen still attempts to alter brightness.

Are these issues likely to be hardware or software related?

Hi SystemG,

Have you tried a restart since this first began? If not, check out Restart your iPhone.

Any app updates? Here are the steps to check: Update apps or use automatic downloads

If the issue remains after those two steps, we recommend contacting Apple Support here: Get Support

Take care.

Hey there SystemG,

We'd like to help with both screen issues. Let's start with ruling out some basics:

  1. Disabling True Tone won't disable the Auto-Brightness feature, but is it enabled currently? You can find out within Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness.
  2. Please confirm the iPhone model you're using, along with the iOS version showing within Settings > General > About.
  3. You mentioned that some parts of your touchscreen work without any issue, but are we correct saying that the top part of the screen is what's been giving you issues? It's hard to tell from the information you provided so far. The more details we have, the better equipped we'll be to help.
  4. If there are any coverings on the screen(like a case or screen protector), please remove them and test for the same issue.

We look forward to hearing back from you about these details, and take care!

Hey Leanne,

thanks for the info.

  1. Yeah, I figured this one out. Not having owned an iPhone for a few years and with True Tine being a new feature (for me), I assumed it related to auto brightness. But sorted now 👍
  2. 12 Pro Max, 256gb running 14.2.1
  3. Most of the lack of response from taps were coming from the top left corner of the screen. But also in other areas too. You can really see how inaccurate the taps are when (for example) tapping within this very text field - tapping the previous full stop and the cursor appearing after the word ‘Most’. However I have seen some improvement in the last few days after a recent OS update. The only method to navigate a cursor around a text field is to hold the space bar and drag the cursor about. Clicking buttons or X’s for actions is a pain.
  4. I have a standard iPhone clear case with MagSafe from new. I fitted a Spigen EZ Fit Tempered Glass Screen Protector yesterday - it’s made no difference.

I hope this helps?

I’m having several issues with the iPhone 12 Pro Max:

  • screen not responsive to touch
  • keyboard does not autocorrect is not working and don’t worry I have checked and Apple three technicians have checked and it is on
  • seems to be slower
  • camera is not good for selfies unless far away otherwise it will show and maximize every imperfections

This is my second phone since the first one got exchanged for this one and I just can’t believe that I paid almost $1500 for something that is not as good as my iPhone 8Plus or 7 for that matter.

I am extremely disappointed and would for Apple to fix these issues immediately with an update or however they wish but this is just not workable.

I took the phone to a Genius Bar. They ran diagnostics, found no fault, reset the phone and sent me home.

We did conclude that the non responsivenes is app related, not device.

That evening after I got home, the phone booted up and apps were installed, I attempted low light/night photos and the problem (flaring/ghosting) was still present.

I booked another appointment with the Genius Bar and showed the what was happening. They agreed it wasn’t right and replaced the handset.

Unfortunately, the flaring is still present. The photo attached shows the flaring, not only direct from the LED’s, but you’ll see the light reflection just behind the cat.

Having searched online, it appears it’s a design fault on all the 12 Pro Max (different camera lens set up) and there’s no getting away from it.

To say I’m ****** off is an understatement. I bought the phone due to claims of it having the best camera on the market. Absolute toss!

the camera is dogged with issues (not just the flaring in low light)

My 4 year old OnePlus6 takes significantly better photos that this - in all conditions. Even my iPhone 6s takes better photos (in some conditions).

I’d love to know what Apple are doing to fix this as some of this is not software related.

Really not what you expect from the “best” phone on the market.

Hello SystemG,

That's good to hear your first issue is resolved, so let's focus on your touchscreen issue.

From what you described moving around the cursor, this is expected behavior. What isn't expected is being unresponsive when tapping near the top left corner, but we're still not quite understanding what you described. You mentioned it's 'improved' with iOS 14.2.1, but please confirm if it's still not being responsive near the top left.

You also mentioned having coverings on your iPhone currently. Let us know if the issue occurred before putting those coverings on your iPhone's screen. Please keep in mind that any coverings on the screen could result in the issue you described.

The non-responsiveness is still an issue although less so than before the update.

It’s mainly the top left, but also on other areas of the screen - e.g when using Instagram, tapping next top right, sometime need to tap it 6+ times before it responds. Also when closing ads that pop up in some games where the x is in the middle of the screen.

The only thing that remains accurate consistently is the keyboard.

The issues were happening for a period of 2 weeks BEFORE I added a screen protector. The screen protector has made no difference and the issues still persist. The screen protector was only added a couple of days ago

from what i’ve searched, many users are having touch sensitivity issues with their Pro Max including me.

when i lay my phone on a flat surface, nothing works when touching the screen, i have to tap multiple times for a response. Many have replaced their phones and have run hardware issues, but it seems to be something with the software, because a lot of phones are doing it. It’s still early stages of the release of this phone and iOS 14, so hopefully apple sees that this issue needs solving, and patches it up in the next update. Hopefully this eases your mind knowing it’s not just you, and that most of the things the people in this discussion tell you to do, will not help. :)
