Big Sur mail: Inboxes missing from sidebar

I have recently upgraded to Big Sur. In Mail.app, the mailboxes section at the top of the sidebar was there initially but I accidentally deleted it, now can't find a way to restore it. (I mean't to delete the new favourites section in the sidebar which is redundant if the favorites bar is visible. Reluctant to do that now in case they are removed from the favorites bar as well)

A mailbox section does transiently reappear to show the outbox when it has something in it but I don't know how to add back the inboxes, or even if it is possible to do so.

This is an essential feature when one has many different mail accounts, imho. Does anyone know if it can be restored? Re-installing Big Sur in recovery mode doesn't do it.

Has anyone else seen this issue and found a solution?

The same thing happened to me. I was dinking around with the Sidebar and my Unified Inbox vanished. Like many things Apple, fine-tuning can be hidden. If you specifically click the + next to Favorites in the Sidebar, you are given a dialog with a list of Mailboxes. If you click this Mailboxes list, the top item will be "All Inboxes". Selecting this will restore the "Unified inbox" and it will live under Favorites. It's subtle, but it is there. Whew!

Did you upgrade from Catalina? I'm seeing the Mailboxes you mention with Catalina but not with Big Sur.

Catalina:

Big Sur

I did a clean install and don't remember seeing "Mailboxes" with Big Sur. In fact it looks like Favorites has replaced and expanded the functionality of "Mailboxes". It still has All Inboxes (mine are collapsed in the screenshot) but you can also add a unified "All Trash", "All Junk" etc.

Checking the Big Sur Help files vs the Catalina Help files, they show the same.

The behavior is the same. Click on "All Inboxes" (Big Sur) and you see a unified inbox just like clicking "Mailboxes" with Catalina.

Clicking any individual Mailbox under that shows you just that inbox (for both).

Will the "Favorites" All Inboxes work for you?

Well, after a few months occasional fiddling I have eventually restore the Mail.app layout to something like I had it before the upgrade - thanks to from helpful comments from others.

It seems Apple forgot the "if it ain't broke, dont' fix it principle" and messed with a few features with unhelpful, even illogical outcomes.

In the sidebar, the previous 'Mailboxes' section which listed all the mail accounts/inboxes has been subsumed into a 'Favorites' section, even though they are not necessarily the users' favorite mailboxes.. Previously, the user-designated favorites were listed along the ribbon (I use Column layout) in numerical order (n=1–9) and could be accessed by cmd-n and messages efficiently moved into them by cmd-shift-n. They still are listed there but also under favorites in the sidebar and here the order in which they are listed affects the keystroke needed to access then. In other words n and the order of items in the ribbon is defined by the order of listing under favorites in the sidebar, which has to be arranged carefully for the keystroke mechanism to work as intended.

There is now duplication/redunancy in listing the users' favorites in both the sidebar and the ribbon. On smaller screens and with many accounts (I currently have 8 active) the sidebar is overloaded.

The other irritations are the toolbar design and the search function. Why on earth is everything shifted to the right and the filter button immutable and immovable? Why is the search box hidden when empty, requiring and additional action before it can be typed into? And why is the default now to search the active box not all mailboxes? These should be user preferences.

Normally, to add the "All Inboxes", click the (+) sign to the right of the "Favorites" header.

Then from the Favorites pop-up, select and add "All Inboxes". It should be dark and selectable if not currently active.

Since you state you see all the Mailboxes usually under "All Inboxes" I'm wondering why you don't see that. If you can't remove then re-add them, maybe Rebuild the Mailboxes under the Mailbox menu.

Howdy,

Are you talking about the Mailboxes under Favorites? I don't think you can remove the Favorites header itself, but if you want to use the Favorites Bar instead, you can collapse the Favorites in the side bar with the little "expand/collapse" icon you see when you hover over the Favorites header.

If you do remove a Favorite from the Sidebar it is also removed from the Favorites Bar.

You can add them back by clicking the little (+) in the Favorites Header (again, hover over the header), then in the Favorites pop-up menu, select and add them back in.

See, Use favorite mailboxes in Mail on Mac

Thanks again -

Yes, I now see I can add an All inboxes to Favorites.

The Favorites Bar has a longstanding feature where a selected message can be moved to favorite#n box with the ctrl-cmd-#n keystroke, so I have sacrificed #1 to have All inboxes there even though I'm always moving a message out of an inbox to a favorite box.

The image above shows that there is a Mailbox grouping at the very top but it is only visible if the Outbox has message(s) waiting to go. One would hope that clicking the + next to its name would allow All inboxes (and the others) to the Mailbox group but, alas, no: it only allows one to create a new mailbox at that location. Why one would want to do that I cannot fathom.

The alternatives under "Location:" are all the existing mailboxes. I suppose that could be useful to some, but not if the Mailbox group us invisible most of the time.

Thanks again for your help. I have a sort of workaround now. I just hope Apple reconsiders and restores the sidebar functionality to how it has successfully operated for ages.

My experience was similar after upgrading to Big Sur and still not fixed. The mail sidebar started with Favorites and then All Sent, All Junk, All Trash, All Draft with my 3 email accounts showing under each category. NONE OF THE MAILBOX INBOXES ARE SHOWING. Been on with Apple for about a week troubleshooting. It seems Big Sur kept the old mail app and installed the new mail app. When I would open mail it would open both old and new mail app but wouldn't let me close either one. Each time I had to go to Forced Quit (which btw was showing the mail app was working) and close it that way. At times I couldn't even open mail at all. We have reinstalled IOS, we have wiped the entire computer and reinstalled from Time Machine. The problem persisted. It's on the 4th tier of experts (engineering I believe) and waiting for phone followup. When I opened it today I found the mailboxes with each category (inBox, Sent, Trash, etc) under On My Mac. If I try to move them up to Favorites they don't appear with the redesigned logo and each category (InBox, Sent, etc) don't shop up under the email name.

Thanks - but no, I'm talking about the inboxes for each account that were collected under a collapsible "[icon] Inbox" above all the other mailboxes at the top of the sidebar under the group heading "Mailboxes". This group has disappeared. It reappears if there is something in an outbox, but I can't see away of adding back the inboxes. The individual accounts lower down the sidebar each have their inbox folder there, but they're not much use down , Leaving Favorites at the top, as in your illustration. there and cannot be moved up under "Mailboxes". I vaguely remember seeing a folder called "All inboxes" under Mailboxes but that's gone. For good it seems.

For years I have used the Favorites bar for the 9 most common folders so I can quickly move messages to the appropriate box with a keystroke.

I'm possibly missing some setting somewhere. If not, it's a bug. There was nothing at all wrong with the arrangement pre-Big Sur.

I have read all the very helpful sounding responses to the issue of inboxes missing from sidebar. I have tried all suggestions. Nothing has worked. The closest is

1) clicked on Favourites

2) pop up box invites to select a mailbox to add to your favourites

3) clicked down green v

4) all bins, all junk, all archive appear in bold black, the rest eg all inboxes appear in gray

5) clicked on 'all bins' - it immediately went gray and disappeared

6) below all this a @and name of one of my inbox/sent folders appeared. I clicked on arrow at rhs & 'sent, bin, junk' appeared in bold black while "archive, inbox, drafts' are in grey

Completely at a loss. Really disappointed I upgraded to Big Sur. It is causing me a huge stress and disruption to how I normally - an efficiently work

Any help appreciated
