Thanks but always on and occasionally readable is not a great default. If alway on and always readable runs down the battery that should be my choice not some nerd in Apple land.

When the Apple Watch goes blurry, are you referring to the screen dimming in the following scenarios:
Use the Always On feature with your Apple Watch Series 5 - Apple Support
"To preserve battery life, the display dims when your wrist is down, or by a quick gesture of covering the display with your hand. A wrist raise or tap on the screen brings everything back to full brightness and makes the watch screen active so you can interact with your watch."
If so, there is not a setting to prevent the display dimming like that and it is expected behavior. If that's not what you're referring to, could you please provide more details?
