gpuRestart often followed by kernel panic

hello,

my 2017 iMac keeps freezing. often, i get these checkered diagonal lines across the a window, in this case, chrome....

this is always associated with a gpuRestart and then sometimes followed by a kernel panic and reboot.

iMac runs great in safe mode, however.

i've tried reseting SMC and NVRAM. no luck. diagnostics show no issues.

this all started back in june when i upgraded to catalina 10.15.5. also installed webex about that time. i've uninstalled webex, but it didn't help.

also tried installing the combo version of 10.15.7 to no avail.

thanks in advance.

Barney-15E,

Thanks for the reply. I rebooted my machine -- not in safe mode -- and it didn't even make it to the login screen. Looking at the logs (Library>Logs>DiagnosticReports), I see a GPU Restart, followed by two watchdog timeouts, then a kernel panic and reboot.

Here is the problem report after the reboot....

I'll take a look at Etreckeck.

Thanks.

Jimmy

You appear to have run CleanMyMac. It likely cleaned something it shouldn't have.

I don't know why you think you need to monitor your Mac with iStatMenus. In 30+ years I have not had any need nor desire.

Since it is entirely possible BrickMyMac has caused damage to the OS, you should just erase the Mac and reinstall the OS. See what happens when you don't run any junk ware on it.

None of that would cause a kernel panic, but it also doesn't improve the performance of your Mac.

My guess is you'll still get panics as it appears to be a hardware problem. Erasing and reinstalling may fix something that is amiss.

GpuRestart logs don’t have anything that aids in determining the problem (at least for me).

If it works in safe mode, it could be a third-party kernel extension, or it could be that Safe Mode disables whatever is causing the GPU restart.

Etreckeck can tell you if you have any third-party kernel extensions installed, but not if they were loaded at the time of the panic. An actual panic log would have that info.

There is nothing in Etrecheck that is going to add anything. I only suggested it if you didn't have a panic log.

There were no third-party kernel extensions loaded in that panic log, so it is likely hardware.

You can do an NVRAM reset, and if that doesn't work, erase the drive and reinstall the OS. See how it runs before migrating anything or installing any apps.
