hp LaserJet 1012 and Big Sur

I tried and tried to get 5.3.3_rev.dmg to work w/ my HP 1012 & Big Sur but no luck. Then I turned off printer, reloaded 5.3.3_rev.dmg, turned printer back on, and success. So happy! Thank you so much for this amazing info!!!!!!!!!!

I'm having this same problem---new laptop running Big Sur and can't get it to connect to HP 1012. I downloaded the Gutenprint but it doesn't appear under System Preferences> Printers and Scanners....and when I try to search for it in Printers and Scanners, nothing appears. Can you give me a little more help with this.....unsure what I'm doing wrong. Thanks.

Just want to make sure you're clicking the + sign to re-add the printer, and then under Use: that's were you are unable to see the Gutenprint driver? Or do you not see the printer at all when clicking +?

As a side note, I have had to occasionally delete, download the driver again, and re-add the printer to get it to continue working. Has anyone else had this problem?

I think I've got it working now....I'm unsure what I did differently, but I'm not going to worry about that! Thank you for your help! (The Gutenprint driver doesn't appear as an option, but after tuning off the HP device and starting it up again...voila!)

Yes I have has the same issue where I had to delete the driver and re-add it to get it to work. But for a free solution for a 15 year old printer that has worked flawlessly, I guess it's just a cost of doing business. I love my HP Printers. Then again I'm an ex HP employee.

While installation of guntenprint-5.3.3_rev-2.dmg worked initially, the printer failed again later. I find that powering off the HP 1012 and only powering it back up and reinstalling it when multiple pages need to be printed may be the best I can do.

Get an AirPrint-enabled print server. A number of them are described on this page.

Apple did not revoke HP's security certificates. HP did that.

Did you download HP Printer Drivers v5.1 for OS X from Apple and open the dmg? Inside, you should find drivers for many printer models. Was the LaserJet 1012 not there (it is in the list)?

I was getting this message for my old Deskjet 3050. I used Pacifist to put the contents into their "Default Locations" and now have a working printer and scanner again.

I had the same issue. Note: You want the gutenprint-5.3.3_rev.dmg from 12/5/20. The gutenprint-5.3.3.dmg was released prior to Big Sur and did not work.
