If your LG monitor has audio-in ports, run an audio cable from the MacBook Pro, and choose the appropriate Sound configuration, to see if keyboard audo controls work via that connection type.
I just purchased the LG 32UN880-B 4K HDMI/HDR10 Ergo display, and there are no keyboard sound controls over HDMI 4K either. The icons appear on screen as you would expect, but with a tiny x at the bottom. So, I have the default monitor audio set at 30%, and use audio controls from YouTube browser controls, or the ⌘↑ or ⌘↓ controls in Apple Music.
Maybe, just maybe, Apple will resolve (if possible) the audio controls over USB-C/HDMI 2.0 in a future release of Big Sur.

Best Regards.
I ended up purchasing speakeramp software from appstore and it helped me control the sound volume from the keyboard .. i have it connected via a mini display port to display port cable to my mac book pro mid 2015 retina. But for some reason the overall sound quality is slightly degraded.
