How do I delete a email on my apple ID that is not correct? Tried but not successful.

"email used by another Apple ID" hey, so I'm trying to change my Apple ID email address. when I put in the new email address, a message pops up: Email used by Another Apple ID. The email address is not available. Choose a different address." I have no memory of that new email being linked to another Apple ID. is there a way to check/fix this problem? thanks in advance!

You can't remove/change @iCloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com aliases.
