Thank you Grant. I don't know how to keep both accounts open at same time.
Open one, then choose New finder window and navigate to the other.
Perhaps the navigation is the stumbling block.
MacOS is inherently a multiple-User system. each of the many possible accounts is stored in subdirectories (folders) beginning at the top-level directory named Users:
/Users
your usershortname
Desktop
Documents
Downloads
Pictures
Movies
etc.
your spouse's usershortname
Desktop
Documents
Downloads
Pictures
Movies
etc.
your child's usershortname
Desktop
Documents
Downloads
Pictures
Movies
etc.
your dog's usershortname
Desktop
Documents
Downloads
Pictures
Movies
etc.
Thank you Grant. I don't know how to keep both accounts open at same time. // Can you tell me how to delete the old accounts?

Set up file sharing on Mac - Apple Support
There is no automatic way to merge them.
This is a manual way:
Open a Finder window to say, your Documents folder.
Choose New window from the file menu.
navigate the second window to the same directory in the second account. Now you have two windows with similar information, from different accounts.
Drag and drop files to get the two windows to your liking.
