iMessage carriage return

How do I enter a carriage return while using iMessage on my Mac Air? CTRL-RETURN does not work anymore.

how do I delete multiple messages from iMessage on my iMac? None of the suggestions I have read work - not command, not shift - I am only able to highlight one message at a time. Using Mac OS Monterey

Option+Return lets you start a new line in Messages.
