How to add another email address to my Apple ID?

Hello,

Two email addresses and two phone numbers are connected to my Apple ID.

I'd like to add a third email address. But when I try to do so in my Apple ID account settings, I get this message:

"This email address is not available. Choose a different address."

Why would an address be unavailable? I set up this address; it's mine. It's a gmail address.

I've checked whether I might have created a second Apple ID using this third address. I don't think I did, and I find nothing to suggest that I have a second Apple ID.

Any advice?

This would only happen if our systems recognize the email as associated to an Apple ID account in one of the ways described via the link we've provided below. This also includes email addresses used for Apple ID accounts that have been deleted.
