Mouse moves WAY too slowly across screen even at maximums setting since upgrading to Big Sur

Since upgrading to Big Sur, my mouse moves WAY too slowly across my external widescreen monitor. I have to slide, pick up and put down the mouse, and slide again at least 4x just to make it across the screen once.

I went into mouse settings and bumped it up to maximum speed but it's still way too slow.

I ended up using a third party Preference Pane app called MouseZoom which fixed the problem but am wondering why the Apple default adjustment doesn't allow the mouse to move quickly and if there is a way to fix this without having to use a third party extension.
