Thank you, I was able to boot in recovery, connect to my WiFi after erasing my hard drive. It is now downloading OS X El Capitan. Your response is much appreciated, I have had this Mac Book since 2007, it ran it course until 2017, replaced it with a 2017, and decided I wanted to recovery the data from my old one, accomplished that, and then I wanted to restore the system with a fresh load, I have all the original SW, including snow leopard upgrade disks, and Office for MAC 2008, to load it up, thankfully I only had to recover from internet and that is in progress. No MacBook Pro originally shipped with or is capable of booting into Mac OS 9.
Generally, you only need one partition unless you'll be using multiple OS versions at once; format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
