Removing the Activation Lock from iPad

Good time of the day to all. The long story short, my ex and I shared his Apple ID. He changed it to the new one just recently and refuses to give me a new password. He also doesn't remember the set up password for the old ID. Can Apple remove the Activation lock from my iPad without a proof of purchase (from 9 years ago)?
