When I now click on a web link from emails the page opens into a small column to the right. I have tapped to enlarge but the column only gets slightly bigger. I have lost the full page format and this is becoming really annoying. How do I rectify this please!

Identify the small grey drag-bar at top-centre of the Slide Over window. Touch-and-drag the drag-bar to the top-centre of the screen - and lift your finger; the Slide Over window will transform into a full screen view.
