Resubmit of EtreCheck report of HD issue (I can't explain)

My earlier posts EtreCheck file looked odd, not like it is here on my screen so I'm going to try again, asking the same question. What has happened to my HD creating so many disks and actually made 1TD unavailable to me.

Can this be brought back to when I opened the box?

Sincerely,

Carla

Not to worry. Thanks to Ferd II, I can now see your report and am going over it. At initial glance, it appears that your iMac is configured with a Fusion Drive. Apple provided this option with a number of their desktops starting a few years back. These drives are actually a combination of a single HDD & a single SSD. These show up as disk0 (HDD) & disk1 (SSD) in your report.

The additional drives are a result of the Fusion drive being "reformatted to APFS" when, either or both, you upgraded your iMac to macOS Mojave, and subsequently to macOS Catalina and/or macOS Big Sur. These versions of macOS use APFS-formatting of the system drive ,,, and specifically for the Fusion drive, the following may shed some light about this:

The other issue, I see from the report, is that you should avoid using "cleaner" apps. These tend to cause more issues that resolve them and we see numerous posts here with folks asking for help on removing them (after the damage has been done.) As such, I strongly suggest you completely remove CleanMy Mac from your iMac.

You've installed what most of the experienced contributors to these forums consider to be akin malware, CleanMyMac. There is no reason to ever install or run any 3rd party "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus, VPN or security apps on your Mac.  This user tip describes what you need to know and do in order to protect your Mac: Effective defenses against malware and other threats - Apple Community. Uninstall it according to the developer's instructions.

You can check to see if you've removed all of the supporting files by downloading and running Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name  and the developer's name in the file name.  For CMM software you'd do the following search(es):

1 - Name contains cleanmymac

2 - Name contains macpaw

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop or Trash bin in the Dock for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

You also have a number of extensions for Safari for ads. One is enough. Pick one and remove all of the other, Adguard, Ad And Stuff Blocker, Minimal Consent, for example.

Sorry, but the EtreCheck report you submitted cannot be opened. Please review the following User Tip article on how you can properly submit it to this forum.

Sorry about that. It looks like anything non-ASCII in a report will cause the forum software to choke. That last entry in the "Installs" list seems to be the culprit. I will have to try to detect and sanitize those.

I'm thrilled to hear I was able to provide all you experts just a wee bit of help for others. Since I was last here I have been going through the iMac using Easy Find to locate all those nasty bits and pieces of so-called "cleaning" programs. To date I've sent 130 items to trash!

Yet my main concern is my HD. I read what you posted and it was like reading a foreign language.

Thank You All!

What a great place to be!

It's hard to get my atrophying brain around all of this wonderful information from everyone. I can't understand the Fusion drive and if that's the culprit of stealing my other TB of storage.

I don't understand how a machine can stay "clean" and free from "disease" without using some sort of program.

But...I have figured out that this is the place I want and need to be!

Sincerely,

Carla
