Since upgrading to Big Sur just recently, some prominent websites, like Facebook, now only display question marks on blue backgrounds where images should be. I never had this problem with the previous OS and neither do I have this problem on my iPad or iPhone. Is anyone else experiencing this or knows why this happens? Also, does anyone know a simple fix?

I've looked at similar threads on this and they tend to point to Safari extensions - but I have no extensions!

Strangely enough, I'm also getting a similar problem with images on Microsoft 365 for Mac. Images within Word similarly appear like this.

Hope someone can help - thank you.

Following my notes above, I looked through the Communities' section on Big Sur and found that one of your esteemed developers has produced an app called 'Etrecheck' which looks for potential issues on a computer running MacOS. I downloaded it, ran it and it seemed to point to an issue with the anti-virus software I was running (Esets Cyber Security Pro). I looked on their website and it stated Esets were having problems upgrading their software to be compatible with Big Sur, so I deinstalled it.

Once deinstalled, all the issues I listed above have now fluttered away and I'm a happy man.

Thank you Apple Communities for eventually getting me there.

Hi there Ferret51,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like some websites open to a blank page with a question mark after updating macOS. We’ll be happy to help.

You mentioned seeing this with Microsoft 365 as well and it sounded like it was happening in Safari. Let’s troubleshoot Safari with these steps: If you can’t open a website in Safari on Mac.

If that doesn’t resolve the issue, test both Safari and Microsoft 365 in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac. Then restart without using the key combination and test to see if the issue is resolved. We hope this helps.

Best regards.

Hi CarlAVII,

I tried all the steps you mentioned in your 2nd para, but these didn't work. I then tried running in 'Safe' mode and there problems largely disappeared BUT the OS was running very slow with WindowServer taking huge amounts of CPU usage, I also could not get my sound to work (I looked on System Preferences and saw that only one of my devices (Airplay) was listed and this was muted (I could not unmute it as it was greyed out. I then restarted the OS without the key combination and the problems returned albeit with a faster running OS and the sound problems disappearing!

One thing I noticed in 'Safe Mode' was that it didn't launch my Anti-Virus software (ESET Cyber Security Pro) and wondered if this might be a factor?

A key site I use is the BBC iPlayer and I just cannot use this anymore. Whenever I try to play a video from it, I get "Not Found. Please check your DNS. Internal reference TA-1437.". I then edit the url from 'https:' to 'http:' and, though it then goes to the video page it is unable to play it with a message appearing on the video 'Content not working'.

Just wondering what I should do next? I cannot be the only person in the UK this is happening to as my wife gets exactly the same messages on her MacBook (also with Big Sur). Wish I'd never upgraded the OS now!!
