Quicktime cannot open screen recording

When I screen record with Quicktime, the recording continues regardless of the 5 second limit and I can only stop it by quitting Quicktime. Then, when I search for my file, it's saved with a random name (rather than "screen recording etc.") with the .mov extension, and I cannot open the video (either on Quicktime or VLC, for example).

I don't know what the issue is since it was working fine earlier today and suddenly this started happening. I have a 2015 Macbook Pro with macOS Catalina.

Hello luli96,

It looks like you're trying to make recordings using QuickTime on your Mac, and also in the playback. QuickTime is a great option for recording and viewing the recording. We're glad you reached out for help.

Start with the resource below that covers many aspects of QuickTime.
