My son has used my AppleID for a bunch of years, but now I got an iPhone and I'd like to transfer him to his own, how can we do that?

Should I just create new AppleIDs for both of us and move things over to both of those? (Truth be told, my original Apple ID that he's been using is on an old email account.

You need to keep your Apple ID to retain access to all your data and purchases. Create a new Apple ID for him.

If 13 years old or older.

Apple ID - create a new.

Apple ID – Create

If under 13 years old, you will need to set up Family Sharing to create an ID.

Family Sharing and Apple ID for your child.

Family Sharing.

Family Sharing - Set up.

When changing to the new ID, there may be some data loss, but you can minimize it. If syncing photos with iCloud, ensure Optimization is turned off in Settings/Your Name/iCloud/Photos and/or in Photos/Preferences/iCloud. Then make sure full resolution photos are on the device/computer. When signing out of iCloud, if asked whether you want to retain data, choose yes. Messages conversations will be lost if they are addressed to the ID. See the article below for other places that the old ID should be removed. See Winston Churchill's response in the below discussion. Also set up Family Sharing between the IDs to keep access to your apps/purchases.

Set up - your child’s iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Well the good news is (shudder) I don't use iCloud for anything...I just switched from Android, so everything I have is in Google (and I intend to sync my iPhone for that as well, so I'm not too worried about that kind of data loss...).

He's 16, so I'll just have him create a new Apple ID for himself and then take back control of my original one...follow up question though: Can I just change the email address associated with my original Apple ID? I tried searching that and it didn't come up.

Thanks!!
