I’m stuck at “Less than a minute remaining...” for 30 minutes three times. One via WiFi twice wired to modem.

iMac High Sierra. OS 10.13.6 Retina 4K 21.5inch. Late 2015. Memory 8 G. Processor 3.1 ghz. Core i5.

Previously I have merely turned my machine off as keystone and mouse aren’t recognized. Screen is all black except Apple icon; and both a white bar that doesn’t move and the “Less than a minute remaining...” showing for 20plus minutes.

How do I stop the update attempt.

Hello NolaDroppedAnchor,

We'd like to see how we can help you with your Mac not starting up. Were you attempting to upgrade to macOS Big Sur? If you're installing macOS, the Apple logo or progress bar might remain onscreen for much longer than usual after your Mac restarts. As installation continues, the progress bar might move slowly and pause for long periods. That's why Apple recommends beginning macOS installation in the evening—so that it can complete overnight, if needed.

If you feel that you've waited long enough to know that your Mac is stuck on this screen, follow these steps: If your Mac starts to an Apple logo or progress bar
