M1 Mac Mini, Displays wont turn on after wake from sleep

Ive a brand new M1 mac mini with 2 external displays 1 on USBC and another on HDMI. One is a samsung 32 4k and the other is an asus 28 4k. Both work perfectly with the mac ordinarily, however on wake from sleep often one or both of them wont turn back on. Turning them off and on doesn't seem to help but unplugging and replugging the cables into the back of the Mac Mini seems to get them working again. This seems to be rather random, sometimes its just one monitor sometimes its the other, sometimes i get graphical glitches on one of the screens (agains fixed by unplugging and replugging the monitor cable into the back of the mini). To me this seems like a software glitch with the graphics drivers I would assume the next update will fix this. I just wanted to flag it up to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing?

I just saw an article today on MacRumors about the most recent seeding of 11.2, which gives me hope because it included the following:

"When ‌macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2 sees a release, Apple apps will be compatible with VPN apps and will no longer be able to bypass firewalls and other security tools.

According to Apple's release notes, the update also improves Bluetooth reliability and includes multiple bug fixes.

‌macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2 improves Bluetooth reliability and fixes the following issues:
- External displays may show a black screen when connected to a Mac mini (M1, 2020) using an HDMI to DVI converter
- Edits to Apple ProRAW photos in the Photos app may not save
iCloud Drive could turn off after disabling the ‌iCloud Drive‌ Desktop & Documents Folders option
- System Preferences may not unlock when entering your administrator password
- Globe key may not display the Emoji & Symbols pane when pressed

The update addresses a bug that could cause external displays to show a black screen when connected to an ‌M1‌ ‌Mac mini‌ using an HDMI to DVI converter, and it fixes an issue that resulted in edits to Apple ProRaw photos in the ‌Photos‌ app not to save. It also includes fixes for ‌iCloud Drive‌, System Preferences, and more.

I'm experiencing the same problem on my MacBook Air 13.3 M1. I have currently 5 monitors connected to it:

Using native single exrernal screen:

1 x Dell 2515H via HDMI port on UGREEN 9in1 hub on MBA M1 top USB-C port

Using DisplayLink

2 x Dell 2515H via StarTech DP 2K hardware

2 x ASUS ZenScreen MB16ACE portable USB-C monitors connected via USB-C to USB 3.0 adapters that came with the monitors that are plugged into another Kensington 7 x USB 3.0 HUB on bottom MBA M1 USB-C port.

So, I'm getting 50/50% of times my native display won't come out form sleep whereas 4 those on DisplayLink always do (rarely it would only swap screens' content to other side but I find it a good thing as my neck doesn't rotate too much one side only as well as pxiesl don't burn all the time in the same places).

I don't intend to disable sleep because that's what it's for. I want to put everything into sleep when am away from my desk or sleep in the room at night and wake all up in the morning to start work. This will also extend life of monitors and is more Eco IMHO.

Well, my problem seems to have disappeared. I've tried a few different things since I last posted, and can't really tell you which of these things, if any of them, fixed the problem... but the problem seems to be fixed for now. Heres is what I have tried:

  1. I still have that XPUS adapter plugged in that was referenced above. It has a lot of ports, so I just kept it plugged in even though it didn't solve the problem initially.
  2. I had to click "mirror screens" to do some work-related tasks, then unchecked it when I was done. I note this because others have mentioned clicking then unchecking this box has helped them.
  3. I have turned off wifi. I read in another thread that the wifi radio may be causing interference with Bluetooth, so I turned off wifi because my bluetooth keyboard kept having difficulty staying connected. Since then, the keyboard stays connected with zero problems. It was also eating through batteries with the M1, so this may hopefully solve that problem too. I know this isn't an option for everyone, and that it also prevents me from logging in with my watch, but it's a feature that I just started using, so I won't miss it much.

Again, I don't know which of these things fixed my wake-from-sleep problem, or if any of them actually had anything to do with it, but everything seems to be working fine, so I'm not changing anything out until the next update.

Hope this helps.

Just wanted to add to the record:

  • M1 mini 16 GB
  • new LG 27UN850-W monitor, connected via USB-C to USB-C
  • Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, no apparent issues with those so far
  • ethernet only (wifi off)

I've only had the mini for a few days, so I haven't done much testing of different settings or cables (and am loathe to switch to HDMI and lose HDR capability). When the mini sleeps normally during the day, no issues with display waking from sleep. However, when left to sleep overnight, display doesn't wake up, I need to unplug and re-plug the cable. I haven't given it it much time to wake in the morning, so perhaps I need to be more patient? Also I need to see if changing DisplayPort version from 1.4 down to 1.2 will make any difference (again, wouldn't be a huge fan of this solution b/c I'd lose HDR), or if turning monitor off at night matters.

I'm new to Macs, but should there be any difference between sleeping for an hour or two, and overnight sleep? It just seems odd that I'm getting a different result from the longer sleep. Am I trying to wake the mini from REM or something? Do I need to throw off its covers, open its curtains, then wait to see what happens? So far, the mini seems to be fantastic otherwise, if I can't figure this out, I'm debating whether to return (I have until 2 Feb to decide) or keep it and deal with it until a - OS? firmware? - solution is implemented, maybe just shut down at night as a compromise? I really don't want to go back to MS/Windows!

My M1 Mac Mini doesnt wake the monitor Samsung 49” even with diconnecting and reconnecting the USB-C to DisplayPort cable. I can wale the monitor even after restarting the computer. In 20 times maybe once the screen activate. But connecting the se M1 mac mini via HDMI it wakes up normally. But with HDMi i have only 1080p resolution. I need 2560x1440 with displayport gives me.

I've noticed something changes when the mac mini has been inactive for a while. I can go through a day where each time I re-wake the mini, one of my displays fails to come on, but this is solved by turning it off & on again. However, when I come back to it the next morning (ie after it's not been touched for 10 hours or so overnight), switching the monitor on and off no longer works - I have to restart the machine.

I have the same thing. But before the screen goes out, there are any noises on the screen like an old TV that does not catch the channel. All accessories are authentic from apple. Cables and adapters from apple. Sleep outages also fail. This basically happens after a long night. I tried everything, but the problem is constantly haunting me. And I thought apple produces a quality product. Another nuance! Before touching the aluminum case, I feel statics and then this problem occurs

Yes. The display configuration changes every time, sometimes randomly. Even when I keep the computer always running (never sleep) and turn off the monitors manually (press the On/Off buttons). When I turn the monitors back on, the arrangement and the scales are wrong. It looks like the Mac mini was not properly tested. I guess these issues will be solved with a system update, but we have to put some pressure on Apple to do it. Some people are already returning their machines, but I need it so I can't do that.

I am confused. The monitor that is connected using the USB-C to DisplayPort cable comes on every time. It is the one connected to the built in HDMI port that seems to be having issues. Also, it works until it doesn't and then I have to unplug and reconnect the HDMI cable or restart the computer to get it to work again. I searched for problems with dongles being used to convert to DisplayPort and I found some that talked about the monitor with the dongle not working but I could not find where the USB-C to DisplayPort cable (dongle) works but causes the built in HDMI port to not work.

I did find this: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/m1-mac-mini-not-waking-display-after-sleep.2270758/. They are reporting happening when only using one monitor connected to HDMI. I am not sure if it is okay to post links on this site. Sorry if it isn't. I suppose I will just contact support - at this point it would have been faster.
