M1 Mac Mini, Displays wont turn on after wake from sleep

Ive a brand new M1 mac mini with 2 external displays 1 on USBC and another on HDMI. One is a samsung 32 4k and the other is an asus 28 4k. Both work perfectly with the mac ordinarily, however on wake from sleep often one or both of them wont turn back on. Turning them off and on doesn't seem to help but unplugging and replugging the cables into the back of the Mac Mini seems to get them working again. This seems to be rather random, sometimes its just one monitor sometimes its the other, sometimes i get graphical glitches on one of the screens (agains fixed by unplugging and replugging the monitor cable into the back of the mini). To me this seems like a software glitch with the graphics drivers I would assume the next update will fix this. I just wanted to flag it up to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing?

Disabling sleep does not work. I have seen this posted multiple times. I have disabled sleep in an effort to get my LG Widescreen monitor to be awakened by my M1 Mac Mini as well as tried every other way to get this to work and it just flat out doesn't work. Apple has a bug on their hands with this. I would advise against ANYONE buying the new M1 Mac Mini until Apple can address this issue. Any "time saved" by the processing boost of the M1 chip is more than offset by the constant rebooting and plugging-unplugging monitor cables all day just to get your desktop back when you step away for longer than 15 minutes.

Not following you here: "am loathe to switch to HDMI and lose HDR capability"

HDMI supports HDR. "HDMI® Specification 2.1 is the most recent update of the HDMI® specification and supports a range of higher video resolutions and refresh rates including 8K60 and 4K120, and resolutions up to 10K. Dynamic HDR formats are also supported, and bandwidth capability is increased up to 48Gbps."

I have the same LG 27UN850-W monitor. The spec on it maxes at 4k@60hz which is exactly the same max as the HDMI port on the M1 Mac mini. Granted, the USB-C port can provide greater resolution and refresh, but our particular monitor can't do anything with that extra.

Possibly, I am missing something in your concern, but I am not seeing a downside to the HDMI connection. Plus, it leaves an extra USB-C port open.

I just saw an article today on MacRumors about the most recent seeding of 11.2, which gives me hope because it included the following:

"When ‌macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2 sees a release, Apple apps will be compatible with VPN apps and will no longer be able to bypass firewalls and other security tools.

According to Apple's release notes, the update also improves Bluetooth reliability and includes multiple bug fixes.

‌macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2 improves Bluetooth reliability and fixes the following issues:
- External displays may show a black screen when connected to a Mac mini (M1, 2020) using an HDMI to DVI converter
- Edits to Apple ProRAW photos in the Photos app may not save
iCloud Drive could turn off after disabling the ‌iCloud Drive‌ Desktop & Documents Folders option
- System Preferences may not unlock when entering your administrator password
- Globe key may not display the Emoji & Symbols pane when pressed

The update addresses a bug that could cause external displays to show a black screen when connected to an ‌M1‌ ‌Mac mini‌ using an HDMI to DVI converter, and it fixes an issue that resulted in edits to Apple ProRaw photos in the ‌Photos‌ app not to save. It also includes fixes for ‌iCloud Drive‌, System Preferences, and more.

In case this helps someone else. I have mini m1 and when connect HDMI to my BenQ 3200u the monitor will not turn back on after sleeping for several hours (OS 11.2). I did find work around that works for me - I have a CalDigit TS3 plus and connected the monitor from the TS3 Plus via Display Port cable. This configuration seems to be working without the sleep problem. It appears to me that there is an issue with the Apple HDMI implementation.

Now that is weird. My experience with the M1 is that none of my monitors (BENQ, Chimei, CMV, Philips) connected via USB-C to VGA adapters will wake, but the Philips 2K monitor connected via HDMI does wake!

Additionally, I'm not so sure that it is solely a monitor issue: if I ssh in to the other minis connected via USB-C to VGA, the monitor then does wake while using the mouse and/or keyboard (both wired USB) has no effect until then. The ssh session takes many seconds to connect whereas when the minis are awake, it is almost instant.

My understanding was that 11.2 was supposed to address the sleep issue but it didn't work in my case. Just happy my current configuration seems to be working. Apple wasn't able to give me any suggestions that worked and they had me call BenQ and I was surprised that they are working on a firmware update that will hopefully address this.

No wake from sleep issues here too. I have an M1-Mac Mini too. I also have an LG.monitor. 32UN880. This monitor will not wake from sleep either. Sometimes if it is only sleeping for a short time 5-15 min, it may wake. I have a Logitech MX for mac keyboard. Tried it both ways, with the USB dongle and Bluetooth, both won't. I tried an apple USB wired keyboard... won't wake. Tried the dongle in a USB hub, tried it with the dongle in the USB spot on the backside of the monitor, still no wake-up. PAIN in the *** to put it mildly. To make it worse, this is my first mac as I had been a PC guy for over 20 years. Built computers for 20 years. The M1 is quite the machine, but it looks like this M1 was not fully engineered to go public. I can't believe I am the only one with this issue.Working with apple, kind of, for a few different days, trying LOTS of things. They were supposed to call me back a couple of days ago but didn't. Downloaded the new #2 patch for BigSur and that didn't work. Don't know whose fault this will be; LG or Apple. Anyone else with no-wake issues on an M1 mac mini

Abandon all hope - the "monitor won't wake from sleep" issue has plagued the 2018 Intel Mac mini since its introduction with no fix in sight (I have three with the issue). All my previous Mac minis (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012) do not have the issue. It also occurs across all brands of monitor and connection types though direct HDMI connections fare best and are rarely mentioned as suffering from the issue.

As the issue occurs with both Intel and M1 Mac minis, it would not appear to be hardware related, but software (ie macOS). But after two years, Apple has made no progress in resolving the issue. Just lodge a bug report and tickle support, but don't hold your breath waiting for a fix.

Thanks for your quick reply. Wow, I'm crushed if your advice is accurate. I am using an HDMI cable direct and it still won't wake. A new cable, high speed, and tested. You had five earlier with no problems, but they were Intel, and then your last one 18, has issues. Being a complete newbie to Apple, (well, I do have an iPhone 7) I am a little naive thinking this should not be an issue with their mighty 'flagship' M1. I'll jump through their tech tests and troubleshooting for a couple of weeks and then I will return it if nothing changes. Is waking from sleep an issue with their new M1 laptops too? Cr@p... Switching to Mac was a HUGE decision...lots of learning for me in a new OS, new office (pages, numbers...etc), printing, keyboard shortcuts, music apps, Photoshop... If anyone else reads this, does anyone have it waking up??? Let me know...

Thanks. I have a new LG 32UN880 and I am connected directly to my M1 Mac mini with a new high speed HDMI cable. I have hope if lots of people have this M1 and have no waking issues. I want to find the 'solution' not just a 'fix'. This is a new setup and I don't want a 'fix' for years. thanks. Apple is working with me on it as is LG and Logitech ( I am using their MX keys for Mac and have tried both the bluetooth connection and the USB receiver connection; both have the same, non waking issues). Are the new M1 laptops having the same issue of not waking?

I have a M1 Mac mini. Short of iPhone and iPad, this is the first Apple computer that I have ever used or owned. I was perturbed by my problem with the first monitor, for sure. Once I upgraded to the LG, all has been good. Even better with the latest Big Sur.

I believe that it is easy to get a tainted view if too much time is spent in forums where everyone is only discussing their problems. Happy users, not having issues, likely don’t tend to hang around in here spreading the positive!
