M1 Mac Mini, Displays wont turn on after wake from sleep

Ive a brand new M1 mac mini with 2 external displays 1 on USBC and another on HDMI. One is a samsung 32 4k and the other is an asus 28 4k. Both work perfectly with the mac ordinarily, however on wake from sleep often one or both of them wont turn back on. Turning them off and on doesn't seem to help but unplugging and replugging the cables into the back of the Mac Mini seems to get them working again. This seems to be rather random, sometimes its just one monitor sometimes its the other, sometimes i get graphical glitches on one of the screens (agains fixed by unplugging and replugging the monitor cable into the back of the mini). To me this seems like a software glitch with the graphics drivers I would assume the next update will fix this. I just wanted to flag it up to see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing?

I just saw an article today on MacRumors about the most recent seeding of 11.2, which gives me hope because it included the following:

"When ‌macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2 sees a release, Apple apps will be compatible with VPN apps and will no longer be able to bypass firewalls and other security tools.

According to Apple's release notes, the update also improves Bluetooth reliability and includes multiple bug fixes.

‌macOS Big Sur‌ 11.2 improves Bluetooth reliability and fixes the following issues:
- External displays may show a black screen when connected to a Mac mini (M1, 2020) using an HDMI to DVI converter
- Edits to Apple ProRAW photos in the Photos app may not save
iCloud Drive could turn off after disabling the ‌iCloud Drive‌ Desktop & Documents Folders option
- System Preferences may not unlock when entering your administrator password
- Globe key may not display the Emoji & Symbols pane when pressed

The update addresses a bug that could cause external displays to show a black screen when connected to an ‌M1‌ ‌Mac mini‌ using an HDMI to DVI converter, and it fixes an issue that resulted in edits to Apple ProRaw photos in the ‌Photos‌ app not to save. It also includes fixes for ‌iCloud Drive‌, System Preferences, and more.

The same monitor was used between the 2018 MacMini (i5 Model) and 2019 MBP16" (base model) and then I changed the monitor out (similar/updated model) and used that between the 2019MBP16" and 2020 MacMini M1. The monitor I have with the 2019MBP16" and MacMini M1 is the LG27UK650_600 (27" 4K Monitor). Oh, also had the 27" Alienware gaming monitor hooked up to the previous two machines (non-M1)... Also, at one point had a 13" MacBook Air 13" (entry level processor)... that was having issues too with the monitor not coming on out of standby.

Having this problem as well, however it has only just started. Was find for first few weeks. I have 2 Samsung 28in monitors connected, one through cdmi to cdmi, one USBc to display port. The monitors don't have USBC ports so this is my only option.

I do have the seperate spaces enabled, which is what I like this effectively gives me 4+ monitors.

I am running 11.1 so it obviously didn't get fixed in that update

I'm thinking the same thing about a powered hub and the mac turning off power to the ports, but then I also think, if the hub is powered, and it is still connected to the port on the computer that goes to sleep, is it going to matter at all if the port itself still sleeps? I am lucky enough to be able to minimize the problem so that all I have to do is turn my monitor off and on every few days or so as a remedy. I think at this point, I'm just going to have to wait for the next update. Kind of annoying with a computer and monitors that are about a month old now, but that'll teach me to get the first model of a new computer/OS right out of the gate. lol

My point exactly, but yours had better detail. It confirms what we know already, that support from the monitor manufacturers/sellers is non-existent, hence all the blame-traffic here.

That said, Apple's definitely at fault for not qualifying their dual-monitor claim with monitor brands that meet it all the way. After all, monitor manufacturers are not claiming dual-monitor functionality, Apple is. So I do sympathize with numerous complaints here, at the very least they've been mislead with a feature that isn't up to snuff (and probably never will).

I'm rather pessimistic and doubt they'll solve the actual problem for those of us not using DVI converter as they're very specific who should benefit from the update but we'll see anyway - thanks for posting this useful info and fingers crossed!

Just a quick update after a couple of weeks update and reading this forum's messages with other solutions:

  • ticking and unticking Mirror Displays in Displays in System Preferences doesn't solve the problem and the sleepy monitor reoccured for me. I try not to touch anything (mouse/keyboard) and only use power/touch ID button to wake my MBA 13 M1 2020 - 80-90% of time it's waking my HDMI native monitor fine but it's still not 100% as my other 4 DisplayLink monitors that are alway waking up properly.
  • moving very rapidly mouse so the cursor "inflates" solution posted by someone here has never worked for me

Thanks. I have a new LG 32UN880 and I am connected directly to my M1 Mac mini with a new high speed HDMI cable. I have hope if lots of people have this M1 and have no waking issues. I want to find the 'solution' not just a 'fix'. This is a new setup and I don't want a 'fix' for years. thanks. Apple is working with me on it as is LG and Logitech ( I am using their MX keys for Mac and have tried both the bluetooth connection and the USB receiver connection; both have the same, non waking issues). Are the new M1 laptops having the same issue of not waking?

I have a M1 Mac mini. Short of iPhone and iPad, this is the first Apple computer that I have ever used or owned. I was perturbed by my problem with the first monitor, for sure. Once I upgraded to the LG, all has been good. Even better with the latest Big Sur.

I believe that it is easy to get a tainted view if too much time is spent in forums where everyone is only discussing their problems. Happy users, not having issues, likely don’t tend to hang around in here spreading the positive!

Immediately after doing this, both monitors came on! However, the problem returned after waking from the next time the mini went to sleep. Trying it again did not help. I still have to disconnect the monitor that comes on--that leads to the other monitor coming on almost immediately. After reconnecting the first monitor, both go blank for a few seconds then come on. I have Catalina 10.15.7 and two LG monitors (a 4K and 5K).
