Upgrading to macOS Big Sur requires your mac to have at least 35.5GBs of free space.

Start off loading files you do not need on an every day basis to an external drive,

movies images and music tend to take up the most space.

When you are sure they have transferred completely then delete them from your mac.

When downloading Big Sur it would be best to have your mac connected to your router

via cable rather than WiFi, do not use the mac while it is downloading and do not use any

other devices that share the same internet connection.

Before upgrading make a full back up of your Mac.

Check that third party apps you use have updates available for the new OS.

https://roaringapps.com

Check that your printers/ scanners etc have updated drivers and software available for the new OS.

If the App Store says ‘Open’ then it is detecting a previous download of the install app

go to the Applications folder locate Install macOS Big Sur.app.

Move it to the Trash, empty the Trash.

Restart, click on the link again, the App Store should say ‘Get' or 'Download'.

If you are considering upgrading to Catalina or Big Sur be warned they do not support 32bit apps.

Your Mac is probably running 32bit apps and these will need to be updated to 64bit apps,

some updates may be free, some may be paid. Use this app to discover which apps you have

are 32bit, https://www.stclairsoft.com/Go64/ then contact the developers of the software to see

if they are providing 64bit updates or alternatives.

On my 2014 Air, I freed up 50 GB before upgrading from Mojave 10.14.6 to Big Sur. As stated elsewhere, you will need a minimum of 35.5 GB available storage before attempting the Big Sur upgrade from Mojave. I connected the Time Machine backup from Mojave, so that on the final reboot, the Big Sur setup manager used that with Migration Assistant to migrate my user files over to Big Sur. The 2014 AIr is running better with Big Sur than anything prior, and it is a 4GB RAM Air.

You didn't miss much by not installing Catalina. I have a clean install of Catalina on an external SSD, and yesterday, I booted from that in the above Air. Within 10 minutes, it had produced a black screen, and would not respond, while I was in another room.
