Desktop and icloud problem

What did I do? Yesterday I updated to Big Sur. Aside from the unsolvable messages problem, there is a new one. Everything, all the folders that were on my desktop are now gone, and only found in icloud. I don't want them in icloud. I went into my apple id > icloud and deselected desktop, but when I do that, even the folders that i put on the desktop (imac on monitor) vanish. I tick the box and they reappear, but the only folders that are there are the ones I drag on there now, not everything that I had there before? I don't want to have to go to my finder>iclouddrive>desktop to locate them? This is wherre they currently reside. Too many steps and just not how I want things set up. How can I fix this please?

Thank you. I did all of that this morning, so I can locate all of the items in finder, they just are no longer visible on my actual desktop on my monitor. I suppose I will have to drag them all back there. It's just frustrating when you have everything the way you want it, and then things so haywire! Thank you. Now if only someone could help me with my contact pics not appearing on the icons on Messages I could settle down and take a breath. Thank you so much.

It's not my photo that's the problem - it's everyone elses. All my contacts have their pictures/faces assigned to them, all in icloud but while they show up on my phone just fine, and on my "guest" account, they are just not visible on mine. Just that grey and white generic icon. I have spoken to three technicians at Apple, spent at least two hours on the phone with them. They even got me to upload the files as they escalated the case to the engineers and still nothing. They said they would get back to me in two days when the engineers looked at the report. They sent me an email with a time they would call. I sat here with the phone on the desk next to me with the ringer on and waited... two minutes after the appointed time I got an email from them saying they tried to call and there was no answer. No sireee... I was sitting right here! It is obvious they have no clue how to fix this, so I keep asking on the forum hoping that someone who is not an Apple employed "genius" can figure it out, because it is really really annoying. All I see are numbers, no pictures - no names. Who remembers the number for everyone that calls them even from their contacts list? I don't - so I have to go into each and every message to see who it's from based on the content. I just feel to scream sometimes.
