cannot remove exchange account

I have an old exchange email account that isn't active it was related to my maiden name and my company gave me a new email address when I changed it. I am trying to remove this old account from my phone as I have a new phone and need to set up a new profile to start getting all my emails. I was able to remove my functioning new name account with the delete button, but I cannot remove the old account this way. I have gone into settings to try and remove a possibly associated profile but there is not one to remove. how do I get rid of this account?
