What happens to my email messages when I use the delete key? Until I upgraded to Big Sur I had a trash box I could search. Now the Trash box is totally empty (even lost the trash that was there before I upgraded).

Hello KermitsDad,

When you open "Mail", (the Apple Mail App) do you see in the left column "iCloud" as seen in the screen snippet? Trash should be located there with the Junk and Archive.

If the Trash is not there, it's possible that the deleted mail is being put somewhere else... There is a setting under Mail Preferences. Click on "Accounts" and click on the "Mailbox Behaviors" tab. Check what the "Trash Mailbox" is set to. It should be set to the "Deleted Messages" under the iCloud section. If it's set to "All Trash" at the very bottom of the list under "On My Mac", that's a totally different Trash bin. Also... login into www.icloud.com and check the "Trash" on the internet... your missing trash items might possibly still be there.

Check your "Account Info" by two finger clicking on your Inbox. At the bottom of the pop-up, choose "Get Account Info" as seen below.

This will open a window with all your account information and mailboxes. Make sure "Trash" is listed in the list. If it's not, you may need to call Apple Support to get assistance with your iCloud email.

I hope some of this information is helpful...

Best of Luck,

Daniel

I didn’t ask about the one listed under On My Mac, only if the server “trash” folder was listed in the account. It may not be named trash. It may be named Deleted Messages, or something similar.

Mail maintains a Local trash folder and your email provider has one in the account (for IMAP accounts).

If Mail is using the server folder, the messages may be there.

Again, No. The ONLY "Trash" folder is under the "On my Mac" heading. I have three email addresses, from two different servers, and all three are POP. Before upgrading to BigSur, all my deleted items went automatically into one Trash folder where they stayed for something like 4 weeks before being automatically removed. I also had a "Junk" folder -- both of those folders seem to have disappeared.

Daniel,

I have three accounts, from two different servers, all set up POP. Before upgrading to BigSur, all my deleted items went automatically into one Trash folder where they stayed for something like 4 weeks before being automatically removed. I also had a "Junk" folder -- both of those folders seem to have disappeared. My iCould shows "inactive" in my mail preferences. (I have been intentionally not using iCloud).

Does BigSur protocol require I change all my accounts to IMAP? (I made them POP, because I used to get multiple glitches with Apple Mail when configured as IMAP.)

What happens to my email messages when I use the delete key? Until I upgraded to Big Sur I had a trash box I could search. Now the Trash box is totally empty (even lost the trash that was there before I upgraded).
