Catergory labels on line graph

I am making a line graph with three columns from a table. The lines display correctly and the Value Labels are correct. However the Category Labels read Untitled 1, Untitled 2 etc etc. I want these labels to show the date relevant to the lines in the graph as shown in another column of the table.

Is it possible to link the Category Labels to data in a column (column A in attachment)?

As I am unable to attach an extract of the actual spreadsheet to better illustrate my query I have instead attached images.

Try reproducing the chart. Here's my version using a table with data in the same columns as your chart, plus date labels in column A (a header column) and Series labels in the charted columns of Row 1 (a Header row).

Steps:

  • Create the table and fill in the data (I placed data only in the columns to be included in the chart, but this is not necessary.)
  • Select the columns containing the data to be charted and the Header column containing the category labels (dates).
  • Click the Charts button and choose Line Chart.

Done.

Cosmetic adjustments and re-scaling the chart are doable after the chart has been created. My first (and possibly only) edit would be to change the number of steps (and if necessary, the maximum value) of the labeling of the Value Axis, to make all the number labels integers.

Category charts require Labels (category names) to be placed in Header rows or columns, and data to be placed in non-header cells in the body of the document.

Click on any cell to activate the table, hen click on the column reference tab for column A, then click the small v at the tab's right end and choose Convert to Header column in the popup menu that appears.

The three "Untitled n" labels across the top of the chart series names for the three series (columns) of date being charted. To replace Untitled with a series name you will need to add a header row above row 1, and enter the names in the header cell of the columns being charted, using a process similar to the one for converting column A to a Header column.

Barry, Thank you for your response. The three "untitled" across the chart are of no consequence, they have resulted from me using an extract from the table with no header rows.

I converted column A to a Header Column as per your instructions, unfortunately this appears to make no difference to the labels at the bottom of the chart.
