2019 iMac i9 Sleep Wake failure in EFI Failure code after Big Sur install

My 2019 iMac i9 has developed a Sleep Wake failure in EFI Failure code after Big Sur install. I had no issues with sleep using Catalina, and everything has stayed the same as when I was running the previous OS. I just reset the SMC and Pram so we will see if that helps. Just woundering if anyone else has run into this issue.

That finding could be pivotal. When I spoke with Apple support on the phone, the rep asked whether I had any peripherals connected to the iMac while it was sleeping, and asked to unplug them. The only thing that came to my mind was a UPS which connects via USB to let the computer know when it’s running on battery.

It was only later—after reading your post—that I realized something else: on many occasions, when the issue had occurred, I’d had an Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable connected to the iMac, and it’d been roughly around the time when I’d bought the cable back in October that I’d first started having the problem (i.e. before Big Sur).

The strange part is, the cable’s other end had usually been unplugged. Nevertheless, in the days since I’d disconnected both the UPS and the Thunderbolt cable, the iMac woke up just fine. I think it would take up to a couple more weeks of monitoring to really make sure it was the cable that caused the wake issue.

On Friday I plugged in the calDigi TS3 I had a second monitor which I used very rarely and also a second Ethernet I used for a second network, but really did not need right now. I disconnected both and I also moved a usb2 hub I had connected to the TS3 to directly to the iMac. I have not had a wake from sleep problem. I do have times when the iMac will wake up for a minute or two for no reason, but that will be for another time. I also updated the TS3's firmware even thought the notes did not say anything about a fix for a wake from sleep problem. So almost two days and no issue so we will see what the next week brings.

Thanks for keeping us posted!

I’ve had zero crashes since the beginning of my observation in early February. I’ve figured I can use Thunderbolt peripherals with no issues as long as I don’t leave them connected while the computer’s sleeping. Have you tried doing the same?

Not to say it’s not Apple’s problem. It still is, and I’m pretty frustrated that it’s still not fixed after many months.

The best antivirus, cleaning app, and overall maintenance app for Mac OS is Mac OS itself. All you need to do with Mac OS to keep it secure and running well is to keep it up-to-date and do periodic (about 1x per week) restarts. Other than that, leave it alone. Adding third party antivirus, cleaning, security and other types of maintenance apps to Mac OS adds no additional level of security. The only thing these apps do is have the opposite affect users want. They make Mac OS slow, unstable, generate odd behavior (much like you are experiencing) and make Mac OS appear buggy.

Please locate the developers uninstall instructions for CleanMyMac and follow to the letter. Then restart in Safe Mode per the directions in Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac and then restart normally.

It's no problem to jump into this discussion, for me it's helpful to see if others are having this problem also. Hopefully someone will chime in who had the problem also. From the test I have done at my end it seems to be a Big Sur issue. I running over 20 Macs between home and the office and have only seen this on Big Sur. Stay tuned hopefully we get this figured out.

I’m having a similar issue with the 2020 iMac running macOS 11.1. Once in a couple of weeks, the computer would refuse to wake up from sleep; neither the keyboard, nor the trackpad, nor the power button would wake it up. The only thing I can do is long-press the power button to shut the iMac down, and once it’s booted again, it shows the following error message.

I was hoping that this update would fix the sleep wake issue but I was presented with the message of dread this morning.

I just wiped the disk and installed a fresh copy of Big Sur 11.2. I just loaded the software I use everyday (Creative cloud & Office). Reset PRAM & SMC. First time the computer went to sleep it crashed and shutdown with the Sleep Wake failure in EFI.

I have the exact same setup on a 2013 MacBook Pro and it runs fine. I am not sure of my next step.

This is what I thought as my problem started when I had the battery changed at the Apple Store. So I went back, they run a full diagnostic and told that everything looked fine. They told me to do a fresh installation of IOS to factory default (Catalina). Which is what I did, but problem persisted. Recently I re-did a fresh install with BigSur 11.2. I still have the problem but doesn’t happen as frequently as before. I didn’t go back to Apple shop as they were not very helpful the first time (dismissed me rapidly 😕).
