VIKING OSX ! EUREKA ! In fact, in resetting the printer, it gives you two options, one of them being multifunction - which I had overlooked (Hm hm...) and by clicking on that, you have access to both the print and scan buttons !!!! So.... SOLVED !!!! Many many thanks and may Father Christmas bring you a special gift !

The Canon MG3650 is supported by Apple's AirPrint, and you don't need any Canon software or drivers. With the device powered, and networked (wired/wireless), right-click on its icon in your System Preferences : Printers & Scanners panel. Choose Reset Print system… and then re-add the device with AirPrint as the driver choice, not Canon drivers. With the printer icon back on the Printers & Scanners panel, right-click on it again to make it the default printer, and then print something.

Forget about the (supposedly) Canon software icon on your Dock. If the printer has a web interface, the print panel will give you access to it.

In the System Preferences : Printers & Scanner's panel, do you have adjacent Print and Scan buttons? If so, click the Scan button, and then select Open Scanner… which should be showing your MG 3650 device. Place content in the scanner, and your should be able to scan that as a preview.
