Hello, maybe a silly question but too get out of the upgrade scheme do I need to pay off my remaining balance on the phone? Or can I just give it back in?

No, but you can pay off the phone, sell it privately, then buy the phone of your desires. I don’t know what model you have currently, or how much you have to pay off, but it’s probably less than you can sell it for.
