I pad screen freezes all the time!

Just received an I pad as a gift and it keeps freezing up. The only way to fix this, is to rotate the I pad or push the Home Button on and off, quite annoying and shouldn’t be happening. Is it defective or is there a way to fix it permanently? Thanks!,,,
