I keep getting "unable to verify update" when I try to update to Big Sur. Does anyone know a fix?

How far along do you get?
Do you have the full installer sitting in your Applications folder(?) "Install macOS Big Sur.app"
What exact MacBook Air is this, the year in particular...

I got about 4 min in the first phase (16 min) each time I try, I get the same message.
Big Sur—Press release states that you will need 35.5 GB of free storage when upgrading from High Sierra or newer, and 44.5 GB when upgrading from an older versions
