How best to add a new computer to iCloud Bookmark syncing?

I want to sync my Mac Pro early 2008 running El Capitan to show the bookmarks all of my other devices share.

When I go into the MacPro’s Internet preferences and check Safari it asks if I want to merge these book marks with those on the iCloud.

What would that do?

Would I be dumping those bookmarks into the carefully constructed bookmark collection I have put together?

I don’t care about any of the bookmarks currently on the MacPro, I just want to sync with the main collection I have on the other devices running the latest OS.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities! Thanks for posting about getting your bookmarks working on your Mac Pro. We'd be glad to see how we can help.

Adding your iCloud bookmarks to your Mac Pro shouldn't change how they appear. However, if you do not want for the bookmarks that are currently on your Mac Pro to be included in the set of bookmarks you have created currently within iCloud, you might consider deleting them prior to syncing that information over. you can learn more about that in Delete a bookmark in Safari on Mac.

Welcome back, Dale.

Go ahead and read over the steps in If your iCloud or Safari bookmarks aren’t syncing and give those a try, even if you may have already completed some of them. Just give them a quick run through start to finish. If the issue still remains at that point, Get Support from Apple directly using this link.

Great question, Dale.

If you go to the Bookmarks menu in Safari, you can choose Edit Bookmarks, which will give you a list of folders. Right-click or Control-click on a folder you wish to delete and choose Delete. That'll remove the folder heading and any bookmarks within that folder.

I cleared my bookmarks (actually I exported them to the desktop) and checked the Safari box in the iCloud Preferences.

Restarted the computer just in case.

The new bookmarks window showed a Favorites folder with defaults, but none of the bookmarks that my other devices (iMac, MacBook Pro, iPhone) share through iCloud.

I know this works because I am sharing Contacts, Calendar and Notes.

The MacPro 3,1 is running E lCapitan 10.11.6 (mentioned in original post).
