Automatic cc-mail only when I reply in Mail

When using Mail (13.4) on my Mac Pro (late 2013) running OS10.15.7 every time I "Reply to all" in an e-mail, I am automatically cc-mailed on the reply. This occurs:

Only on Reply to all actions and not on new e-mails that I initiate from my Mac Pro.
The "automatic cc-myself" in Composing is turned off and has been turned on then off on several occasions.
Occurs with only one of my two main e-mail accounts
If I access that same e-mail via Outlook and use that to "Reply to all" in the same e-mail I am NOT automatically cc-mailed on the reply.
This does not occur with the same e-mail account on my Mac laptop.

I suspect that there is something deeply embedded in my Mail application on my Mac Pro that is doing this but I dont know how best to troubleshoot.

Welcome any assistance to work out this annoying little Mail wrinkle.

Hi ryane77 - Many thanks for that last piece on advice regarding Disk Utility. I ran it for both my Desktop and my Data and that seems to have fixed the unwanted automatic cc-mail problem in Mail. Kudos to you for the great suggestions and assistance.

Hi MaxSLC,

Thanks for posting your question! As we understand it, you're finding you are CC'd when replying to email, but it only happens with a specific account on a specific Mac, and you've double-checked your settings. Is that right?

If that's correct, the best way to narrow this down further will be to create a temporary administrator on your Mac, and then sign in there and add the same account to see if you can replicate the issue. This will tell you if the issue is system-wide, or if the issue may be within the user account. Here's how to Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

Hi MaxSLC,

Thanks for testing that! You are correct, the results do suggest the issue is system-wide. With that in mind, try booting your Mac up into safe mode, and then log in to your normal user account: How to use safe mode on your Mac. How does it work in safe mode? Knowing that the issue is system-wide, the results of safe mode will help work out the next best steps.

Hi MaxSLC,

Thank you for letting us know what happened in safe mode. That helps in ruling out some types of software causes. Try running First Aid on your startup disk next. You can do this from macOS Recovery as shown here: Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

Hi ryane77 - Many thanks for your advice. I did as you suggested and created a temporary administrator account on my Mac and then set up my Mail account with problematic Exchange account. The problem was indeed replicated in that when I "Replied to All" I was automatically cc-mailed on the reply. I checked that the "automatic cc-myself" in Composing was turned off. Hence, this suggests that the issue is system-wide and not solely within my usual user account.

Rebooted in safe mode per instructions and then opened Mail.

Same problem persists when running in Safe Boot mode.
