iPhone functionality with Apple Watch

Problem: Paired new Apple Watch Series 6 to iPhone 11. iPhone no longer provides an audible prompt for phone calls or messages when locked. Verified by turning off bluetooth on both devices. iPhone functions normally. Goal: iPhone to retain full functionality with watch paired. Any solutions out there?
