As the screenshot shown below, with only three webpage open, safari is using enormous amount of memory while only 4 pages open. The is obviously something wrong with it, because normally I could have 60+ tabs open without any problem. And this is an Apple silicon Mac, memory management should be more efficient.

Same here. Mac Mini M1 8GB RAM. Safari with 3 tabs uses 5-6GB of RAM.
Some folks say that it's nothing to worry about as macOS will typically uses as much memory as it can,
because unused memory is wasted memory.
But that doesn't explain why an older game I am running in a different window right now, stutters while I randomly check the tabs Safari...
I have the same issue "using significant energy" even when only a single YouTube tab is opened. I have macbook pro m1 16gb model.
Yea... you are not alone. I had only two tabs, and the browser restarted because of memory issue. Was during a Conference Google session. Did not have a chance to run another browser yet. Did you have any issue with another browser? Mine is in the box right now because of the dual monitor issue. I might send it back...
Having the same issue with my M1 MBA w/8GB of RAM. The usage by Safari continually creeps upwards until this happens:
me too! so frustrating when we just spent so much money on new computers! I have to keep my activity monitor open and check it constantly, so I don't get forced out of my applications!
