How to record the screen on my Mac with mac sound?
to record the internal mac's sound with quicktime you do need additional software. i use a kext file from the retired soundflower app. the app no longer works but if you download the kext file from this page it will do what you want to do. you will also need to set up a multi-output device in your audio MIDI setup utility. there are instructions on how to set it all up on the link i provided. one thing you should know is that the kext file is signed, but the installer is not, so you'll need to follow the instructions to the letter to install it. and just fyi, i downloaded and installed it while still on catalina, but the extension still works on big sur.
this is the file you need from the above page:
Hi guys,
Thanks for the thread! I have an M1 MacBook Pro looking for screen recording with audio.
I followed the instructions of this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCLA5xJP9Ms
BUT, instead of using SoudFlower, y downloaded BlackHole Virtual Audio Driver (2ch option) to create the "Aggregate Device" and the "Multi-Output Device".
It just works. Best regards!!
Hi Pejso,
From your post, it sounds like you need help to record the screen with audio on your Mac. This support article may help: Record your screen in QuickTime Player on Mac
Before starting the recording, choose Options in the bar that pops up at the bottom. Under the section titled Microphone, choose the microphone source.
Have a great day.
when you open the MIDI setup, click on the "+" sign and choose "Create Multi-Output Device"
then in Multi-Output Device, select where you want the sound output to go.
then, before you start a recording, open the sound in the menubar and choose the multi output device.
then in the recording options, choose "BlackHole" as the microphone.
note, if you want to listen to the mac's speakers while recording, set the internal speakers' volume to a comfortable level BEFORE choosing the multi out. once multi out is selected, you can't control the volume.
in a different thread, another user said he uses Open Broadcaster Software. their site says it works with macOS 10.13 and up. but, once again, i don't know about M1 compatibility. i tried it and, personally, i didn't like it. but maybe you can contact them to see if they have any info about their app and the M1 chip. :)
I had soundflower installed previously and it works in Big Sur.
If you're having problem installing it try using the demo versions of Pacifist to install it.
Jeffrey, have you seen if Soundflower works in Big Sur (and on an M1 chip)? I'm reading that it no longer works for new Macs. I'm looking at getting Snaggit https://support.techsmith.com/hc/en-us/articles/360051987832-MacOS-11-Big-Sur-and-the-TechSmith-System-Audio-Capture-Component but would prefer to not have to spend $50. Thanks for any thoughts on this.
it does work on big sur, but i don't know if it works on M1silicon. mine's intel based. if you wan't to try it only puts ONE file on your mac, and removing it should be no problem if it doesn't work with yours. the file lands in /Library/Extensions

the file in the above link is not the entire app. it's just an extension that allows you to choose soundflower as the input source. i can verify that the complete app was retired. the app worked on my previous mac (high sierra) but would not work when i got this mac (came with catalina). i had to completely uninstall it and just use the extension.
Thank you, Jeffrey. I've downloaded the Soundflower-2.0b2.dmg file, and gone through the process of allowing it to open via Privacy, and I'm then able to see the Soundflower.pkg. However, I then get this error message. Not able to get to the .kext file.
Definitely still following this thread! :) I'm actively looking for a solution, and can't wait to pass it on to my other M1 colleagues, and they also have a need to record videos of stuff happening on their screen and need to record the computer's audio.
Thanks for the Blackhole link. I'll download it and test it this morning.
Ok, the Blackhole driver seems to have successfully installed on my M1 Mini. However, their help page http://existential.audio/blackhole/support/#micsystem doesn't look anything like the Audio MIDI Setup utility currently in Big Sur. The Blackhole driver is there in the list, and if one right-clicks on it, there is the dropdown that appears in this screenshot. If I select "Use this Device for Sound Output" and then go to QuickTime to record a portion of my screen that is capturing, for instance, a YouTube video, the audio still isn't being attached or heard in the recording.
There may be some pilot error in what I'm doing so far.
above and beyond the call of duty, jeffery. Thank you, that helped with the + sign and getting the Multi-Output Device to show up. I did successfully get it all showing up, but then the Multi-Output choice in the Audio menubar started spinning, and it wouldn't stop. Tried force-quitting Finder, but still got the spinning ball in the drop-down. I restarted and the Multi-Output just plain disappeared from the Audio menubar (and the System Pref: Audio).
I'm suspecting that there are issues with the M1 chip.
i'm unsure about anything to do with the M1 chip. but it sounds like you're almost able to get it working. in your case you may want to contact the developer and see if they can help you get it working. good luck.
yeah, it works on my machine in big sur too. but he tried the install and couldn't get it to work. he's thinking it may be a compatibility issue with his M1 chipped mac. maybe you could look at his post about soundflower on page 1 and see if i may have missed something there? thanks.
