M1 MBP Screen Flickering, External Monitor Crashing, & Unable to Connect to Apple Watch

Hi all, I LOVE this new M1 MacBook Pro, but it is exhibiting some issues that my Intel MacBook Pro never had!

First, I have noticed the built-in display sometimes flickers if the resolution is scaled down. Scaling it back to default seems to fix the problem. Anyone else seeing this? I want to make sure it's a software and not a hardware issue.

Second, when connected to an external monitor, I have seen the M1 lock and log me out and the external monitor will go black. It's the same monitor and cable I used with the Intel Mac and never had this issue. It's EXTREMELY aggravating because it will lock me out in the middle of work.

Lastly, and maybe this is somehow related to the display issues, my M1 MacBook Pro does not automatically unlock when my Apple Watch is nearby like my Intel Mac used to. I went into Settings>Security and I click on the "Use your Apple Watch to unlock apps..." and then I get this error every time: "Your Mac was unable to communicate with your Apple Watch."

These three things are really affecting my workflow, so I'm hoping these are easy fixes. Anyone else seeing these issues?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.0

UPDATE: Since updating to Big Sur v 11.2.1 my monitor connection / flickering / display issues have been resolved. I simply ran the software update that was recommended and the problems were fixed. Hope that helps someone else!

apple wont help you or reply to the issue but if you want to fix the issue where you cannot see past the Siri logo each time you login goto settings > displays resolution > scaled move the scaled setting all the way to 'more space' far right , let the screen update, then move it back to your usual setting. I do that every time I wake from sleep. Disgusting its still not fixed.

Hello all, I came across this thread as somewhere the text matched M1 Mac mini. I too have had the problem of screen flickering and/or cutting out and coming back on occasionally. Someone suggested a different cable. I did that and it got worse. That's when I knew they were on to something... it took me going through three different HDMI cables, but on the last one I seem to have a stable video signal with no dropouts. Not sure why it's sensitive but hope this helps someone - be persistent or willing to buy a new one?

I have exactly the same problem with the new macbook M1pro 16 inch.

After investigation, it turned out that the Led lighting in my room was the cause. When the light is off I have no flickering, but when I turn it on the flickering occurs again.

Now I use for Teams, WhatsApp video and Facetime ,a normal lamp at night and that works well.

Kind regards

I just ended a chat with a Support Engineer, we tried different cables and adapters with similar results, but the flickering never returned. HDR settings in 4k Monitor are lost almost every single time that MBP is on "sleep" and wakes up, restarted PRAM, Safe Mode, etc. No luck. In the end apparently, there's a patch coming up for this; there's no cable or hardware-related problem but a BigSur one; no idea when it will be out.

I have had the same issue with my M1 Air. 16gb ram, just got it a week ago. Initially connected to an HP z27n @ 2560x1440 over a DP 1.2 cable usb-c to usb-c. The laptop monitor started flickering and the resolution was off (couldn’t see date in upper right corner). After talking with support I was advised to try another cable, preferably apple branded. I bought the Thunderbolt over usb-c cable from the apple store. I plugged it in today and from the get-go my external monitor has intermittently gone black for a few seconds, then it comes back. Talked with support again today, advised to try safe mode, do all the troubleshooting steps on the site etc. obviously hard to troubleshoot an intermittent issue on the line. Very disappointed as I really like this laptop, but the external monitor is critical for my work so I’ll have to return it if I can’t get this problem fixed.

For me this happens depending on the monitor connected. Using my Mac mini M1 (Big Sur 11.2.1), this is what I see:

  • LG UltraFine 5K (the older model from 2016) TB -> TB. => no issues.
  • Sceptre U279W (4K 60hz) over DisplayPort -> TB => no issues
  • Lenovo A19270QY1 (1440p 144hz 27") over DisplayPort -> TB => picture goes black and then comes back a couple times per minute

So it does look like a real issue, but whether it occurs depends on the external display being used.

Same issue. Flickering is fairly consistent, though, intensity is not. I'm also getting terrible ghosting from my M1 mini.

This was not an issue on my docked 13" Intel MBP with the same monitor (Dell 27" U2720Q via USB C). I've tried different cables and may different settings -- on my Mini and monitor -- with no avail.

This issue needs to get fixed. This seems like an issue that is beyond the realm of "Early Adopters" and is very wide spread. I'm just hoping this is a software issue that can be fixed.
